Terfel, Friedman, and Russell Set for BBC's 'Sondheim on 80' Concert, 7/31

The BBC Proms, an annual BBC event featuring classical musical will take place at the Royal Albert Hall between July 16 and Sept. 11. BBC Proms are broadcast on BBC Radio 3. This season, Prom number 19 will focus on the work of Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim in honor of his 80th birthday.

The concert, "Sondheim at 80" will take place July 31. Opera and theatre figures will come together for event, including Bryn Terfel, Maria Friedman, and Simon Russell Beale.

Terfel and Friedman have performed together in the Royal Festival Hall's 2007 concert staging of SWEENEY TODD. In the production, Terfel played the title role and Friedman played Mrs. Lovett. Friedman has starred in the London premiere's of Sondheim's SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, PASSION, and the regional production of MERRILY WE ROLLE ALONG. Beale is currently playing in LONDON ASSURANCE and is scheduled to appear in the West End's new production of DEATHTRAP by Ira Levin.

"Sondheim at 80" will feature excerpts from SWEENEY TODD, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, INTO THE WOODS, COMPANY, PACIFIC OVERTURES, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. The concert will be directed by Martin Duncan and David Charles Abell will conduct the BBC Concert Orchestra. The concert will also feature singers from the BBC Performing Arts Fund.
