Winner of the 1996 Obie Award La Gringa is about a young woman’s search for her identity. When Maria Elena Garcia goes to visit her family in Puerto Rico for the first time she arrives with plans to connect with her homeland. Once home though, she realizes that Puerto Rico does not welcome her with open arms. If she is seen as a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, Maria concludes that she is nobody everywhere.

American Stage has announced its upcoming production of 'La Gringa,' a compelling and bilingual play that delves into themes of identity, culture, and belonging. This groundbreaking production will captivate audiences with its authentic portrayal of language diversity and the vibrant Puerto Rican experience. The show will run from July 19 - August 13, 2023 at the Raymond James Theatre in Downtown St. Petersburg.
The Colored Museum a play with music was written by George C. Wolfe. The play premiered at the Crossroads Theatre in 1986 and was directed by L. Kenneth Richardson. Wolfe’s work is the focus of 11 individual sketches or “exhibits” and through these revues, recounts satirical and prominent themes and people throughout African-American History and Culture. As the second show in their 2022/2023 “This is America” Season, American Stage planned to stage this show as a way to redefine our ideas of what it means to be African American in Contemporary America. George C. Wolfe’s review show was the winner of the 1988 NAACP Image Award.
The final show for American Stage's 45th season is Carmen Rivera's comedy La Gringa, the longest-running Off-Broadway Spanish Language production. La Gringa recently passed a milestone of 26 years in production at Repertorio Español in New York.
