The sound of Italy, its people, its art and its history – an inexhaustible source of inspiration for musicians as displayed by the bright and optimistic works that Mendelssohn composed after visiting Italian soil.
Mendelssohn travelled throughout Europe and wherever he went, he was inspired to compose music. The trip to Italy was made at the age of 22, passing through Venice, Bologna, Florence and Rome. In the capital he met Berlioz, who was just beginning to work on his magnificent symphonic poem with viola soloist Harold in Italy, an intense and dramatic work, inspired by the romantic hero prototype described by Lord Byron. To open the concert, a work by Benet Casablancas premiered just over a year ago by the Munich Chamber Orchestra.
