Orchestral sonority without mutes: four authors who have managed to make the most of the orchestra, from the power of Wagner to the depth of Strauss, to the elegance of Ravel and experimentation of Boulez, whose 90th birthday we celebrate.
The orchestra is the most rich and complex instrument that composers have at their disposal for experimenting and creating music. Wagner exploited its harmonic and timbral possibilities to levels that never could have imagined before; Strauss went even further in the pursuit of expressivity of great blocks of sound; Ravel continued to innovate with the addition of instruments like the saxophone, and Pierre Boulez, and in the second half of the twentieth century, broke the patterns with proposals such as Rituel where eight instrumental groups are facing each other.
