Smetana is considered the “father of Czech music”. His operas and symphonic poems reminded the neighbouring Germans and Austrians that there was very good music being made in Bohemia. My Homeland (Ma Vlast), a set of six symphonic poems, is his most popular work.

Program

Smetana composed the six parts of Ma Vlast in a little under four years when he was completely deaf. A lover of his homeland, the symphonic poems that comprise the work describe his country from top to bottom, whether exalting its natural landscapes - castles, rivers and cities - or recalling certain episodes from its mythology. Khachaturian composed his spectacular Violin Concerto in 1940 and dedicated it to violinist David Oistrakh no less. The following year he received the Stalin Prize and it immediately became part of the repertoire of violinists of the 20th century and now those of this century. The programme is completed with a work by Josep Maria Guix (released in 2011) based on Japanese haiku poems.
