The First Symphony allowed Shostakovich to graduate with honours from the St. Petersburg Conservatory and at the same time to go down in musical history. Prokofiev, who had studied there some time earlier, had just consolidated himself with his Violin Concerto.
Program
While Shostakovich, at the age of 19, had just rushed to finish this end of course work, Prokofiev premiered a violin concerto in Paris that he had written a few years earlier. The success of the two works was diverse: that of Shostakovich immediately enjoyed several performances and soon became the composer’s most popular work; that of Prokofiev, however, imposed itself only gradually, eventually becoming a required repertoire piece for all violinists. And, to begin with, we have a selection of children’s tales interpreted by Ravel: The Sleeping Beauty, Little Tom Thumb, Beauty and the Beast, etc.
