On this day in 1996, the beloved rock musical, Rent, made its off-Broadway premiere at New York Theatre Workshop.

There is truly no day but today when it comes to FOX's Rent, which airs tonight at 8pm. Since it premiered off Broadway in 1996, the musical has earned a special place in the hearts of all those who have encountered Jonathan Larson's powerful message- Rentheads and ordinary theatre-goers alike. On this day, we remember the original, groundbreaking Broadway production of Jonathan Larson's RENT, which played its final performance at the Nederlander Theater on this day in 2008.

Universal, translated into more than 22 languages and presented in more than 100 cities, RENT gets a new Brazilian production with presentations on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. How do you count one year of your life? The winner of the 4 Tony Awards (Best Musical, Best Song, Best Original Score and Best Supporting Actor), RENT tells a year in the lives of eight young people who have to face the adventures and misadventures of their loves, friendships, conflicts, financial problems, sexuality and the struggle with human finitude. More than a musical, RENT is a chain of love!

Two decades after it took New York by storm, RENT is preparing to inspire a new generation of audiences as it launches its 20th Anniversary Tour later this month. BroadwayWorld has just exclusively learned that RENT, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning landmark rock musical written by Jonathan Larson, will return to the road in a 20th Anniversary production that promises to be as impactful and exciting as the original.

Today in 1996, Rent opened at the Nederlander Theatre, where it ran for 5123 performances. Rent is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won a Tony Award for Best Musical among other awards. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008 after a 12-year run.

A regional production of RENT doesn't open until January at Coeur d'Alene's Lake City Playhouse, but locals are already protesting the show because it 'promotes vulgarity and sets a bad example.' Watch the video below to check out the full story.

Producers Jeffrey Seller, Kevin McCollum and Allan S. Gordon have announced that the landmark musical Rent will open in a new, off-Broadway production on Thursday, August 11 at New World Stages, 340 West 50th Street, Between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. Previews begin Thursday, July 14.
