The SPCO's Liquid Music Series to Present Steven Mackey
by BWW News Desk - May 2, 2016

A volatile combination of music, imagery and dance take on the operatic form in Orpheus Unsung, composed by Steven Mackey with Jason Treuting (S? Percussion) in a production conceived and directed by Mark DeChiazza. Copresented with the Guthrie Theater June 16-18 at the Guthrie's Dowling Studio, Orpheus Unsung casts the electric guitar as the disembodied voice of Orpheus, who seeks to reverse fate and regain an irrevocably lost eurydice. In this wordless opera, the myth is shattered and ultimately re-made within a space that fragments story and identity, and hangs in teetering balance between solidity and hallucinatory illusion. Orpheus's journey is illuminated in new language, as music collides and fuses with the expression of the body, cinematic imagery, and transformations of physical space. Alongside an ensemble of three dancers, Mackey and Treuting perform live in Orpheus Unsung, which will be presented alongside Mackey's engaging and personal string quartet Ars Moriendi, performed by musicians of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. BWW Review: APT's Extraordinary EURYDICE Weeps for Fathers and Lovers
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Jun 30, 2016

Name one person worth passing through the gates of Hades for while singing a song so sorrowful the stones would weep--A parent? A child? A partner? Perhaps even a true friend? American Players Theatre stages eurydice, steampunk style in the Touchstone Theatre, recreating Sarah Ruhl's ethereal, surreal play examining love and the lengths someone would travel to serve that love. Based on the Greek myth of lovers eurydice and musical rock star Orpheus, the child of Calliope and perhaps the God Apollo, Ruhl transforms the myth with a tale in tribute to her own father. Directed by Londoner Tyne Rafaeli, this production acquires a spiritual ambiance drawing the audience into Ruhl's and Rafaeli's underworld where Orpheus searches for eurydice and literal sobs, tears flowing freely, were heard in the audience on opening day. The sub-title is Opera Feerie which translates as "extravaganza", and in 1874 it was an absolute extravaganza. The cast was comprised of 42 named principals; 100 choristers (men, women and children), and sufficient dancers for four Grand Ballets (10 Principals, 16 corphees and 60 dames des corps de ballet) … A grand total of 228 performers Offenbach's comic, bitingly satirical, witty and occasionally "naughty" parody of the tragic Orpheus legend involving the Mount Olympus Gods of classical Greek mythology is a farcical, merry romp that has delighted audiences the world over since its Paris premiere in 1858. Like a runaway train, this dark comedy about two brothers and their mutual resentment takes audiences on a thrill ride into the dark side of the human psyche, with laughs and unexpected moments of revelation along the way.  In its world premiere, the San Francisco Chronicle noted that True West is "clear, funny, naturalistic. It's also opaque, terrifying, surrealistic.  If that sounds contradictory, you're on to one aspect of Shepard's winning genius-the ability to make you think your watching one thing while at the same time he's presenting another."
