A new play by Conor McPherson

May 1822, rural Ireland. The defrocked Reverend Berkeley arrives at the crumbling former glory of Mount Prospect House to accompany seventeen-year-old Hannah to England. She is to be married off to a Marquis in order to resolve the debts of her mother’s estate. However, compelled by the strange voices that haunt his beautiful young charge and a fascination with the psychic current that pervades the house, Berkeley proposes a séance, the consequences of which are catastrophic.

She says that sometimes, while she plays the piano, she can hear someone… singing. Or crying. I forget which.

Set around a haunted house hemmed in by a restive, starving populace, Conor McPherson’s new play weaves Ireland’s troubled colonial history into a transfixing story about the search for love, the transcendental and the circularity of time. His last production for the National was the Tony Award-winning The Seafarer.

All of you have a shared capacity to apprehend the beyond. And you perhaps more than any of them have the darkest instinct for second sight.

BWW Recap: It's True Colors Week on INTRUDERSBWW Recap: It's True Colors Week on INTRUDERS
by Courtney Henley - Oct 4, 2014

We're at that point in the season, folks, when things on INTRUDERS are starting to piece themselves together. Next week's episode is the finale (how can this be?!) and The Veil hiding Qui Reverti is slowly being lifted. More than plot progression, though, there's some serious character development going on this week, and it's awesome. All these developments can be a lot to handle, though. I get it. But the creative team has faith in us to follow along, and I have faith in us, too! Just in case things have gotten a little jumbled, let's break this thing down, character by character. (more...)

Glagoslav Releases A HISTORY OF BELARUS by Lubov BazanGlagoslav Releases A HISTORY OF BELARUS by Lubov Bazan
by BWW News Desk - Oct 30, 2014

Rare materials on Belarus are a potential treasure trove for the English language reader. A blank spot on the map for many, Belarus is an undiscovered mystery in the heart of Europe - undiscovered, because little has been published on the country's history and current affairs, and the origin of the ethnic group that calls itself 'Belarusians'. Author Lubov Bazan attempts to uplift The Veil of secrecy surrounding Belarus and answer an important question of the ethnogenesis of the Belarusians. Unique in its ongoing struggle for independence, throughout its history Belarus has been deprived of this luxury by being continuously included in various state formations such as Kievan Rus', the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Kingdom of Poland, the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. 'A History of Belarus' is a thorough chronological narrative that covers major milestones of Belarus's journey into the 21st century. Lubov Bazan gives her readers plenty of leeway to form their own conclusions about the historical material presented. By incorporating different theoretical viewpoints on fundamental issues such as the ethnic background of the Belarusian people and formation of their national identity, the origins of the language, and the historically complex religious composition of the country, Bazan offers a platform for discussion. by Ellen Dostal - Oct 28, 2014

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions but for Dr. Faustus (Adam Mondschein) the shortcut forged by a writ in blood expedites a journey that has nothing to do with being good. Frustrated in his search for knowledge and arrogant in his desires, he makes a deal with the Devil (Lexie Helgerson) and in exchange for his soul, is granted twenty-five years with Lucifer's demon Mephistopheles (Suzan Crowley) by his side, serving him in any way he chooses. 'Blood on The Veil' is a mesmerizing theater piece with the commendable mission of dispelling the misconception that the ancient oriental art of belly dancing is nothing but a dance of seduction. Written, choreographed, and performed by the multi-talented Carol Henning, the performance involves not only dancing but also her passionately delivered monologues laced with humor about her journey from illness to health. Fittingly, Henning's stage name is 'Tandava', which is Sanskrit for the Hindu deity Shiva's dance of destruction and rebirth. (more...)
