BWW Review: New Epic Theater Wows with the Strikingly Beautiful THE NORMAL HEART, to be Continued with Shakespeare's CORIOLANUSBWW Review: New Epic Theater Wows with the Strikingly Beautiful THE NORMAL HEART, to be Continued with Shakespeare's CORIOLANUS
by Jill Schafer - Mar 30, 2016

In just their second season as a theater company, New Epic Theater is tackling not one but two challenging and not often performed political plays with The Normal Heart and CORIOLANUS, performed in rep (something that's also not often done). It's an ambitious undertaking for any theater company, much less a young one. But in this short time New Epic has already established themselves as a company that does striking work, both visually and emotionally. The first half of this pair of plays opened last weekend, a strikingly beautiful and devastating production of the 1985 Off-Broadway play The Normal Heart about the early days of the AIDS crisis. Friends, this is a piece of theater not to be missed. The Normal Heart returns on April 7, but in the meantime you can see the other piece of the puzzle, Shakespeare's CORIOLANUS, this weekend, as I will be. Director Joseph Stodola and New Epic Theater have a unique vision, one that deserves to be seen. (more...)

BWW Review: Love (and Anger) in a Time of Plague: THE NORMAL HEART at VagabondsBWW Review: Love (and Anger) in a Time of Plague: THE NORMAL HEART at Vagabonds
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Feb 29, 2016

But the play is not all philosophical argument, as important as this is: it also is a love story, a family tale, and an account of the 'band of brothers' that was Gay Men's Health Crisis. And like most great playwrights who turn their attention to public events, Kramer maintains a tight relationship between these stories. Kramer's artistic control of the huge canvas on which he paints is in the end what makes the play so powerful. (more...)

BWW Review: Relatable HICK, Eleanor Roosevelt's Lesbian Love Story, at Theatre ProjectBWW Review: Relatable HICK, Eleanor Roosevelt's Lesbian Love Story, at Theatre Project
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Feb 26, 2016

This was a substantial play that dealt thoughtfully with a host of issues. There's feminism: the story of a woman fighting her way through a male-dominated profession, rising from a little paper in Battle Creek to a national byline with the Associated Press. There's journalistic ethics: what happens when a reporter gets too close to a subject, and the tricky line between reporting and public relations. Then there's the problem encountered by an involuntary archivist: what to do with a trove of letters that reveal a historical personage's private life? And most of all, there's a strange love triangle: on the evidence of the play, Hickok was nearly as smitten with Franklin Roosevelt's policies as she was with his wife, going so far as to serve in his administration. BWW Profile: Mark Ruffalo Oscar-Nominated Star of Stage and ScreenBWW Profile: Mark Ruffalo Oscar-Nominated Star of Stage and Screen
by Courtney Henley - Feb 23, 2016

It all started with 13 Going on 30. At least, it did for me. (This makes it sound like I'm about to write a cheesy romantic novel. My apologies.) I, along with basically every girl in my 8th grade class, fell in love with the adorable, slightly nerdy best friend of Jennifer Garner in the coming of age hit of 2004. I took to IMDb (as one does) and instantly decided that Mark Ruffalo was a pretty cool guy, and a pretty cool actor. Fortunately, it wasn't long after that that Mark Ruffalo started appearing in some of the biggest blockbusters in Hollywood: Zodiac, Where the Wild Things Are, Shutter Island, and The Avengers. Hollywood thankfully agreed with me. (more...)

BWW Review: THE NORMAL HEART at Vintage TheatreBWW Review: THE NORMAL HEART at Vintage Theatre
by colin roybal - Feb 17, 2016

'The Normal Heart' by Larry Kramer is not a light-hearted piece of theatre. It is a heavy drama about the terrifying 'new cancer' that ravaged the gay community in the early 1980s. It is dark and frustrating, and beautiful, and the script demands a lot of a cast. It seems that Vintage Theatre Company was up to that challenge and more. (more...)

The weekend before last, New Epic Theater opened a strikingly beautiful and devastating production of the 1985 Off-Broadway play The Normal Heart about the early days of the AIDS crisis. Last weekend they opened part two of their ambitious spring repertory production, Shakespeare's CORIOLANUS. The two plays share the same terrific eight-person cast, innovative and distinctive director Joseph Stodola, performance space, set, and overall look. Separated in time by about 400 years, The Normal Heart and CORIOLANUS are in some ways similar and in other ways very different. Both continue the trajectory that this new company has set right out of the gate with visually and emotionally impactful work. The two plays will be performed in rep for the next two weekends, culminating in both shows being performed back-to-back on Saturday April 16. Friends, New Epic Theater is an exciting new addition to our bountiful theater community and I urge you to see one or both of these plays to experience their unique vision. (more...)
