What did our critic think of LES MISERABLES (2022 TOUR) at Key Bank State? This is a musical with the word 'miserable' in the title, has physical beatings and numerous onstage deaths, and lacks a typical happy ending. Is this the stuff musicals are made of? Not usually. But, there is no reason that serious subjects cannot be treated in the musical form. Les Miz proves that contention, as does 'Next to Normal' and 'Dear Evan Hanson,' and proves it well.

The winners have been unveiled for this year’s Olivier Awards with Mastercard, British theatre’s biggest night, which took place this evening (Sunday 10 April) at the Royal Albert Hall in London, hosted by Jason Manford. 

On Monday, June 25, Ellen Barkin, Eric Bogosian, Edie Falco, Gideon Glick, Josh Hamilton, Lee Pace and Mark Ruffalo appeared in a one-night-only reading of Larry Kramer's The Destiny of Me, to benefit The New Group.  Trip Cullman directed with an introduction by Tony Kushner. Regeneration Theatre presents AS IS by William M. Hoffman. The gay community has the opportunity to look at its historical journal through ground-breaking envelope-pushing works currently in revival in New York. Boys in the Band and Angels in America on Broadway and AS IS opening February 1 off-Broadway. 

n 1985, when As Is first appeared at the Circle Theatre, AIDS was a new moment in time. A pandemic with no cure or reason. AS IS was one of the first plays, and subsequent teleplay, depicting how AIDS was affecting the LGBTQ Community. Its power was also in that it focused on a small group of friends and what it did to them. It proceeded Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart by about a month.

Lucky you. It is unnecessary to go to New York to see a production of this epic. It is now running at Ensemble Theatre as part of their 'We The People' 2017-2018 season. The first segment, subtitled 'Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches,' is running until January 28. In April, 'Angels in America, Part Two: Perestroika,' will be staged at the theatre.

Fueled by love, anger, hope and pride, Larry Kramer's masterpiece THE NORMAL HEART centers on a circle of friends struggling to understand and contain a mysterious disease ravaging New York's gay community and one man's fight to awaken the world to the urgency of the situation. The guest production at the Chromolume Theater is magnificently directed by Marilyn McIntye on the small stage, a large part of which is due to the 5 moveable set pieces designed by David Mauer which are moved about to create all the different rooms so necessary for the production. Set changes are inspirational to watch, choreographed like a ballet down to the slightest detail.

Larry Kramer's unabashed indictment of the politics surrounding the early days of the AIDS epidemic debuted in 1985 and is no less surprising or powerful almost 30 years later. Set in New York City, The Normal Heart unfolds like a real-life political thriller as Ned Weeks and a close-knit group of friends shout into the darkness about what they see happening to their friends and community. Their warnings erupt into all-out fury as everyone from government leaders, healthcare providers and the mainstream media ignore the mounting crisis. The Normal Heart was revived on Broadway in 2011 for a limited, sold-out run. It won three Tony Awards and has been made into an HBO motion picture starring Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo. This deeply moving play is part of freeFall's SEASON OF OUTCASTS, and plays through February 16.

TimeLine Theatre Company continues its 2013-14 season with Larry Kramer's Tony Award-winning The Normal Heart. Pulitzer Prize-winner Lawrence Wright premieres his new play at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. It is a fictional play about the last days of legendary journalist Oriana Fallaci. Don't miss this sizzling new script, which is directed by Oskar Eustis, stars Concetta Tomei and Marjan Neshat, and features an incredible team of designers. The 65th world premiere presented by Berkeley Rep, Fallaci is currently in previews in the Roda Theatre and opens March 13, running through April 21.
