Josie's Organics Encourages Using All Parts of VegetablesJosie's Organics Encourages Using All Parts of Vegetables
by BWW News Desk - Jun 30, 2015

It has become fairly common to purchase fresh broccoli at the grocery store, cut off the florets once in The Kitchen, and discard the stalks before cooking. Throwing out radish greens, beet leaves and chard stalks is pretty typical, too. These vegetable parts actually can be eaten and are quite delicious. It just takes a little knowledge and practice to use them. Josie's Organics is setting out to help home cooks see vegetables in a whole new way - literally - and turn them on to whole vegetable cooking. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Israeli Opera Festival Takes the Leap with TOSCA, Staged at the Foot of the Historic Masada FortressBWW Reviews: Israeli Opera Festival Takes the Leap with TOSCA, Staged at the Foot of the Historic Masada Fortress
by Richard Sasanow - Jun 25, 2015

At Masada—the mountain fortress in Israel's Judean Desert--a group of besieged Jewish rebels killed themselves rather than be taken alive by the Romans almost 2000 years ago. In Puccini's TOSCA, the eponymous heroine jumps from Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo rather than being taken prisoner for killing the evil chief of police, Scarpia. So much for the logic of staging this intimate work as part of the fifth edition of the Israeli Opera Festival--but, remarkably, the very traditional production by French director Nicolas Joel worked very well indeed in the great outdoors. Dorset Theatre Festival to Stage Katie Forgette's SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE JERSEY LILYDorset Theatre Festival to Stage Katie Forgette's SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE JERSEY LILY
by BWW News Desk - Jun 23, 2015

Dorset Theatre Festival will stage Katie Forgette's Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily, a delightfully funny and exciting take on the famous detective story that weaves together threads of history and literature including the great Sherlock Holmes himself, his trusted friend Watson, the sinister Moriarty, the glamorous Lillie Langtry, and even Oscar Wilde. The production will be directed by Margarett Perry and will run from July 9th through the 25th. 'There is a reason that Sherlock is such a popular figure in literature as well as on stage and in film,' says Artistic Director Dina Janis. 'These mysteries are engaging throughout and always very satisfying. This piece in particular is so clever and entertaining.' The Case of the Jersey Lily places literature's favorite genius detective right in the middle of a blackmail scheme that connects the famous actress Lillie Langtry, celebrated playwright Oscar Wilde (just finishing work on his new play, The Importance of Being Forthright), criminal mastermind James Moriarty and Queen Victoria herself. BWW Reviews: EMMELINE Will Wring Your Heart at Opera Theatre of St. LouisBWW Reviews: EMMELINE Will Wring Your Heart at Opera Theatre of St. Louis
by Steve Callahan - Jun 17, 2015

This review was first published by KDHX 88-1 St. Louis. Opera Theatre of St. Louis has opened a very fine production of 'Emmeline,' by Tobias Picker, with libretto by J. D. McClatchy. This remarkable piece premiered at the Santa Fe Opera in 1996 to great praise. It was done at the New York City Opera in '98 (with much the same cast)—again to considerable praise. It was deemed one of the great modern operas. Except for two 'reduced version' productions the work lay fallow until this full-scale revival by Opera Theatre of St. Louis. (more...)
