The Laguna Playhouse Executive and Artistic Directors, Karen Wood and Ann E. Wareham are thrilled to present the second show of their 2014-2015 season, THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING by Joan Didion and directed by Jenny Sullivan (Steel Magnolias). 'To have Linda Purl on our stage with one of the more powerful pieces of theatre I have come across is just a triumph that our audiences and subscribers are going to treasure,' offers Wood. 'Jenny Sullivan is quite simply one of our best theatre directors working today and to have her bring her magic touch to the powerful words of Joan Didion is simply a dream realized,' adds Wareham. THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING will begin previews on Wednesday, October 8 and will open on Saturday, October 11 at 7:30pm and run through Sunday, November 2, 2014 at the Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach. The Old Globe invites your participation and coverage as it begins presenting shows through an exciting new producing platform, Globe for All. This free-of-charge tour of a professional production of Shakespeare will allow the theatre to serve more communities throughout San Diego by collaborating with a diverse range of local organizations. Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein directs the first production, Shakespeare's fascinating romance All's Well That Ends Well. He has cast local professional actors, including recent graduates of the Old Globe/University of San Diego Graduate Theatre Program. Hard to believe I am beginning my 9th year as a writer for Broadwayworld.com. This has been a remarkable year in theater. This season I reviewed 37 plays and wrote nine other articles, classical reviews and promotion pieces for a total of 46. My visits included the following theaters: Everyman (7), Center Stage (6), Signature (5), Kennedy Center (4), Olney Theatre Center (3), Round House (2), Arena Stage (2), Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (2), Folger (1), Red Branch (1), and Ford's (1). There were two Baltimore Symphony events and the honoring of Jonathan Tunick with the Sondheim Award at the Signature Theatre. I enjoyed interviewing actors Michael Winther, Brynn O'Malley, and Choreographer Janet Rothermel. (more...)
