BWW Review: ABC's NASHVILLE Could Learn a lot from Legit Soap OperasBWW Review: ABC's NASHVILLE Could Learn a lot from Legit Soap Operas
by Matt Tamanini - Sep 24, 2015

Wednesday night's Season 4 premiere of ABC's NASHVILLE brought a heavy helping of the show's soapy best and worst. I make no bones about the fact that when it comes to TV, I have a few guilty pleasures; one is this country music, primetime soap opera, and another is ABC's lone remaining honest-to-goodness soap opera, GENERAL HOSPITAL. While NASHVILLE opens up its season with a heaping helping of delicious melodrama, I find myself becoming increasingly weary of the repetitive storylines that the show has been stuck in for the past season-plus. I think if Callie Khouri and her writers leaned in and fully embraced the show's soapy nature, it might result in a more fresh and creative product. So, I have come up with five soap-inspired rules that I think will help the NASHVILLE writers as they plot out the rest of the season. (more...)

BWW Reviews: SLEEPING BEAUTY at American Ballet TheatreBWW Reviews: SLEEPING BEAUTY at American Ballet Theatre
by Barnett Serchuk - Jul 11, 2013

In my next life, I'm returning as the world's foremost dance historian to write the ultimate chronicle of Tchailovsky's Sleeping Beauty from 1890 to 2013. It's going to be a huge tome, one that encompasses every move, scene shift and cast change that was ever seen. Actually, by the time I finish my epic work, it will be superseded by an even larger tome, but that's life. What led me to this decision was American Ballet Theater's production of Sleeping Beauty that I saw on the July 6, 2012, the closing night of the season. This sent me back to my books, DVDs, CDs, balletomane friends and YouTube to decide just what Sleeping Beauty is all about, or should be about. (more...)

Having spawned a Disney movie, The Sleeping Beauty is likely the most well known of ballet's "big three."  Almost every ballet company and ballet school has produced a version of this piece.  American Ballet Theater was founded in 1939 to create a repertory of ballet's best historical works and to create new classics.  In The Sleeping Beauty at The Kennedy Center, Alexei Ratmansky has brought one of the most canonical works in ballet back to its roots.
