The Metropolitan Opera opens its 130th season with a new production of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, conducted by Met Music Director James Levine and directed by Richard Eyre. Town Hall Theater will broadcast it live on the THT big screen October 18th at 1:00 pm. This is the first time since 1941 that Mozart's enormously popular comedy-in which various romantic entanglements complicate the nuptial plans of Figaro and his bride-to-be, the clever housemaid Susanna-has been chosen to open the Met season. Stories of religious coflict and controversy have been around as long as...well...religion. Today, we are indundated with stories about the way religion continues to change, shape, impact and effect us and our world. Religious fanaticism, especially, has come to the forefront in recent years and now dominates the news we read and hear. Religious themes are also presented in artistic and creative works, including movies, books, tv shows and plays, including This Beautiful City, the first show of the season at The Wilbury Group. And while the play's life started with a interesting concept, the final product is mostly a rehash of religious stories we have heard many times before, told in more compelling and relatable ways. Brimmer Street Theatre Company to Offer Public Readings of Three New Plays this Fall

As part of its 2014 Blueprint Series play development program, Brimmer Street Theatre Company has announced public readings of three new plays. Judy Presley on a Binge by Chelsea Sutton will be presented on Tuesday, October 7 at 8pm; Madame by Michelle Meyers will be presented on Sunday, November 9 at 7:30pm; and Gentlemen by David Jette will be presented on Sunday, November 16 at 7:30pm. Judy Presley on a Binge will be at the 2nd Stage Theatre in Hollywood; Madame and Gentlemen will be at Studio A Dance in Silver Lake. Following each presentation, audiences will be invited to engage in brief discussions with the playwrights and participating artists. Admission is free and no reservations are required. (more...)

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey to Stage HENRY VIII

Next up on its Main Stage, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey presents the Bard's epic pageant play Henry VIII. Centered around the tug-of-wars between church and state and husband and wife, the play culminates in the birth of England's future Queen Elizabeth I, Shakespeare's great patron and Henry's fierce and very female heir. Performances begin October 15 at the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, 36 Madison Avenue in Madison. Tickets start at $25 for preview performances and $32 for regular performances. Student rush tickets for all performances are $15, available a half-hour before curtain for with a valid student ID. MISS JULIE to Run 10/21-11/8 at August Strindberg Rep

From October 21 to November 8, August Strindberg Repertory will transport Strindberg's 'Miss Julie' to an antebellum Louisiana plantation in a new interpretation conceived by Artistic Director Robert Greer and adapted by Edgar Chisholm from a translation by Greer. The production will include a ballet sequence, which Strindberg specified in the original manuscript and which has never been performed before.
