by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 7, 2016

Lovingly skewering the not-so-subtle art of telenovelas, Karen Zacarías' winning play DESTINY OF DESIRE---now being performed at Orange County's South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through November 13---compresses an entire series' worth of over-the-top melodramatic goodness into a two-act play that, not surprisingly, comes off as an intentionally hilarious comedy. STAGE TUBE: Hillary and Donald Hug it Out in SNL's Final Cold Open Before the Election
by Stage Tube - Nov 6, 2016

Last night's cold open on SNL started out frosty as ever, with Alec Baldwin and Kate Mckinnon reprising their roles as Donald Trump and Secretary Hillary Clinton, respectively. The pair were joined by Cecily Strong as Erin Burnett, host of CNN's OutFront. After the latest rumble of an e-mail Scandal caused by James Comey this previous week, the sketch was built primarily around Burnett repeatedly returning to the discussion of Clinton's e-mails, even in the face of Baldwin's Trump literally kissing a member of the KKK, Putin, and other controversial figures who have endorsed and supported Trump's campaign.  (more...)

BWW Blog: Keanna Irving - ARCADIA
by Guest Blogger: Keanna Irving - Nov 17, 2016

For a few evenings during the week, several students change out of their business casual attire and push the rows of desks towards the wall, creating a makeshift rehearsal studio in an empty classroom. Within four brightly painted walls, students create art. They abandon homework for a few hours to direct, rehearse, and produce a play. For the fall of 2016, the King's College has decided to tackle Arcadia by Tom Stoppard. This show simultaneously takes place in 1809 and 1993. The 1993 characters spend their scenes researching and debating the lives, landscape, and literature of 1809 Sidley Park, a place of genius discoveries and Scandal. In a theatrical touchdown for the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, stage and screen star Darren Criss has agreed to reprise the notable title role he stepped into last year on Broadway: as Hedwig in the just-launched national tour of the rousing 2014 Tony Award-winning reboot of the glam rock musical HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, which began last month in San Francisco and continues its Los Angeles-area performances through November 27 (Euan Morton assumes the role for the rest of the tour starting November 29 in San Diego). Featuring solid direction from Michael Mayer and dynamic new musical staging from choreographer Spencer Liff, the searingly electric, engagingly hilarious show, at its core, celebrates the triumph of living life as authentic and as tenaciously as possible, no matter the constant obstacles. It's certainly a wonderful message to remind everyone in such uneasy times of late. (more...)
