BWW Review: 4 MINUTES 12 SECONDS Is Must-See Contemporary Commentary at Old Fitz Theatre
by Brodie Paparella - Sep 26, 2016

4 Minutes 12 Seconds is THE show you need to see, and one of the best pieces of theatre we've reviewed this year. Take your kids, your partner, your friends, your siblings. Theatre as an art form is known for entertainment, but the best theatre is made to challenge, to comment and to contribute to transitions of culture. This production by Outhouse Theatre Co at Old Fitz, is precisely that: gripping, contemporary and powerful. Zooming on the parents of a promising young man caught in the centre of a online video Scandal, audiences face questions about parenthood, pornography, consent, domestic discord, and the obsession of the modern generation to share. A five-star, fierce piece of theatre. (more...)

BWW Review: BLACKBIRD is Dark, Deep and Compelling at Off Broadway, Sydney Fringe
by Brodie Paparella - Sep 16, 2016

The beauty of Fringe festival is an opportunity for emerging talent to be revealed amidst an energy of mystery and excitement about which fresh face might be a rising star in the diverse and strong community of local artists. Blackbird definitely fit the bill for such discovery, featuring at the tucked-away Off Broaday venue in Annandale. There in amongst the contemporary pop art outside, and the trashy cafeteria set inside, was woven a dark and devious tale of a reunion between a man seeking a new future, and the young woman who holds all the keys to redemption of them both. Fifteen years prior to her showing up at his workplace, Una was Ray's pre-teen lover whom he abandoned during a romantic getaway. For him, a swift prison stint followed by a new life and lifetime of secrecy, but for her, the scorn and Scandal in her hometown that appears to have left her in bitter ruin. Together they will unravel their relationship and leave audiences next to breathless. (more...)

The National Theatre Radu Stanca Romania and Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu presents ANTISOCIAL
by BWW News Desk - Sep 13, 2016

ANTISOCIAL is a detailed examination of the problems that ravage the Romanian educational system. In February 2015, in a provincial town in Romania, at one of the most prestigious high schools in the region, a group of students started a secret group on Facebook. In there, teachers and students were ridiculed and mocked. A teacher infiltrated the group by using a fake profile and discovered the contents. The students were threatened with expulsion. At this point the group had over 800 members. Soon after, most of the memes posted on the group were leaked to the local press. The Scandal generated a debate around freedom of expression, privacy on social media, and the rights of students, but it faded shortly after. The school was only interested in covering up the case to save its prestige. Due to media pressure, the charges against students were dropped, but that was also the end of the public debate around the future of an educational system that privileges traditional methodologies and resists innovation. BWW Review: BAD APPLES at ACT Shocks, Disturbs, Potentially Offends, and Kills It!
by Jay Irwin - Sep 10, 2016

Are there any taboo subjects for musicals anymore? I mean we've had shows about serial killers and assassins, drug addicts and prisoners, demons and super powered psychotic teens, and even oversexed puppets. So I don't know why anyone should be surprised by the new musical at ACT in conjunction with ArtsWest and Circle X Theatre Co., 'Bad Apples' which takes a look at one of our countries most disgraceful moments, the Abu Ghraib prison Scandal. This in your face rock musical will definitely not be everyone's cup of tea and especially not for the kids. But if you can get past all the language, sex, and horrific images then what you're left with is a killer show that looks at how easily people in power can justify appalling acts. (more...)
