Based on the play Front Porch in Flatbush by Julius J. Epstein and Philip G. Epstein

Sondheim. Signature’s Signature. Stephen Sondheim’s hidden gem Saturday Night (1953) is a Signature special concert event that will play for four performances only. Unproduced for almost 45 years, Saturday Night is the first musical Mr. Sondheim ever wrote. This romantic comedy surges with the composer’s unique musical voice and sophisticated lyrics. On the eve of the 1929 stock market crash, a group of Brooklyn boys despair their dateless Saturday nights. One of them dreams of Manhattan society life and hatches a get rich quick scheme which ultimately backfires. Features gems such as “Saturday Night,” “So Many People” and “What More Do I Need?”

BWW Review: NEWSIES Is Exceptionally Entertaining, Bursting With Raw Energy!
by Robert Encila - Jul 18, 2017

Disney's Newsies is a Tony Award-winning musical derived from the motion picture of the same title. Produced for the first time in Manila, it has commanded the day's headlines and kept a viewing public abuzz with excitement. We can assume Disney's ubiquitous brand had preceded its product, given the film's relative failure to draw critical and commercial acclaim in the early '90s. Considering its cult following after the release of the home video, it makes sense to bring musical theater back to its logical milieu where live performance of a Broadway musical is unparalleled. This production has been every bit as advertised: it's electric, witty, and poignant. (more...)

Imagine a late-night German television programme like MANN, SIEBER! filtered through the pop culture aesthetic of an American variety show like Saturday Night LIVE, and you might know what to expect from IN WHOREFISH BLOOMERS: THE WAITRESSES' LAMENT, which is more a 'kabarett' than what South African audiences have come to call cabaret. BWW Interview: For the Creators of The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts' World Premiere Musical, THE KIDS' TABLE isn't Such a Bad Place to Be.
by Elliot Lanes - Jul 17, 2017

When arts in education institutions produce musicals, they tend to stick with titles that everyone is likely to recognize. For the past 25 years DC's very own Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts has produced musicals that fall into this category – for example, Pippin and Jesus Christ Superstar with their Musical Theatre Institute for Teens, as well as other lesser known shows like Side Show – but what other teen program has embarked on the journey of premiering a new show? None that I know of, which is why I keep on singing The Theatre Lab's praises. (more...)
