Based on the play Front Porch in Flatbush by Julius J. Epstein and Philip G. Epstein

Sondheim. Signature’s Signature. Stephen Sondheim’s hidden gem Saturday Night (1953) is a Signature special concert event that will play for four performances only. Unproduced for almost 45 years, Saturday Night is the first musical Mr. Sondheim ever wrote. This romantic comedy surges with the composer’s unique musical voice and sophisticated lyrics. On the eve of the 1929 stock market crash, a group of Brooklyn boys despair their dateless Saturday nights. One of them dreams of Manhattan society life and hatches a get rich quick scheme which ultimately backfires. Features gems such as “Saturday Night,” “So Many People” and “What More Do I Need?”

BWW Reviews: Great Performances Can't Save Epic Theatre's Tedious HURLYBURLY
by Robert Barossi - Apr 13, 2014

David Rabe's Hurlyburly, currently presented by Epic Theatre Company at Theatre 82 in Cranston, explores some well-known territory. It's Los Angeles in the 1980s. We're in the apartment of a couple of wanna-be Hollywood players. Vulgar, crude, rough-around-the edges guys who are trying to make it big, or at least make it, in Hollywood. They don't seem to have much real ambition though, or much actual talent, intelligence or qualifications when it comes to achieving their dreams, such as they are. All they actually do is sit around all day and night, drinking, doing drugs and having sex. These are not the bright and shiny celebrity filmmakers of Hollywood. They are the underbelly of the city, and Rabe peels back the surface and exposes all of their nastiness, not to mention their loneliness, paranoia, insecurity, greed and misery. (more...)

by Emma Cambey - Apr 13, 2014

"A life lived in fear is a life half lived" or so say the characters of Strictly Ballroom in both the musical and the 1992 original film. Anyone who has ever seen anything created by Baz Luhrmann would agree that Baz never does anything by halves and he is certainly fearless. To take one of your most popular and iconic films and turn it into a stage musical requires courage and a whole lot of confidence and creativity, none of which Baz Luhrmann lacks. The resulting musical, which opened Saturday Night, is one that will please and entertain fans of the iconic film and will also create a new generation of fans of the story in its new form.
