Award-winning architect Frederick Fisher, who has earned international recognition for his work with spaces such as Bergamot Station & Galleries, Santa Monica's Annenberg Beach House and Descanso Gardens' Sturt Haaga Gallery of Art, joins the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) for its acclaimed Westside Connections series, which this season pairs LACO's virtuosic musicians with leading artists to explore connections between music and architecture, on Thursday, March 19, 2015, 7:30 pm, at the Moss Theater, located at The Herb Alpert Educational Village at New Roads School. During the program, Fisher reflects upon his collaborative approach to architecture, in conversation with special guest, Los Angeles Times architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne. A performance of Brahms' breathtaking String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op. 111, showcases the close collaboration among LACO Concertmaster Margaret Batjer, who curates and hosts the series, LACO Principals Sarah Thornblade, violin, Roland Kato, viola, Victoria Miskolczy, viola, and Andrew Shulman, cello. Batjer is also featured in Kevin Puts' Arches for solo violin, and Thornblade and Kato join forces for Donald Crockett's To Be Sung on the Water. The series, which began in February with a guest appearance by Frank Gehry, continues in April with Hawthorne. Fisher has been described as a “maverick architect…with a broad aesthetic” (KCET). His innovative style, and his residential, museum galleries and other buildings reflect his keen interpretation of space, light and material. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Above the Fold! Pulsating NEWSIES Storms the PantagesBWW Reviews: Above the Fold! Pulsating NEWSIES Storms the Pantages
by Don Grigware - Mar 28, 2015

In 1899 droves of newsboys from every borough of New York City banned together and went on strike against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other wealthy newspaper owners, in a crusade to save children from menial wages and physical abuse. This was a first, where uneducated street kids stood up to the big suits and won. In 1992 Disney created the movie Newsies that went on to become a humongous hit. In 2012 Harvey Fierstein, Alan Menken and Jack Feldman came to Broadway with a musical show they created based on the film. Under the Disney banner, the first national tour of Newsies is currently onstage at the Pantages. All I can say is run, don't walk, to purchase tickets. The Newsies ensemble pulsates from the moment the lights hit the stage. It will jolt you, fulfill you and make you jump for joy. (more...)

Broadway's Tony Award-winning production of Cinderella (2013) has a brand new book by Douglas Carter Beane and an expanded score of the glorious music of Rodgers & Hammerstein. As the musical based on the fairy tale possesses a more contemporary storyline, both Cinderella (Paige Faure) and Prince Topher (Andy Huntington Jones) are different - they are Orphans, whose similarities in character make them a perfect match. No more losing her Venetian glass slipper at the first act curtain, this Cinderella, with much help, love, support and encouragement from her fairy godmother (Kecia Lewis) is in control and journeys into the second act with a mission to make the 'Impossible' truly 'Possible'. by BWW News Desk - Mar 13, 2015

While the topic of war inundates the media daily, scenes from the battlefields flash across multiple (and increasingly smaller) screens so quickly that viewers often do not have time to consider the true impact of seemingly never-ending conflicts. Picturing War: Selections from the Zimmerli Art Museum Collection, on view through July 5, provides visitors the opportunity to reflect on specific battles and how they factor into broader themes. With nearly 130 prints, paintings, photographs, and sculptures by more than 50 artists, the emphasis is on the daily lives of soldiers and civilians: their moments of turmoil, but also their compassion and determination. These artistic responses to the great civil and global wars of the modern era – some created on the frontline, others through the lens of history – capture the propaganda, the human reactions, and the aftermath. In a run-down house in North Philadelphia live two almost-feral orphaned brothers: the reclusive, sensitive Philip, sealed off in a world of tinned tuna and Errol Flynn movies, and Treat, a violent pickpocket and thief who steals to provide for his younger brother. Into this ferocious and funny world enters Harold, a mysterious, wealthy, middle-aged man who is kidnapped by Treat, but who soon turns the tables on the two brothers, changing forever the delicate power balance of their relationship. Both hilarious and heartbreaking, Orphans is a story of the universal love of a father for his son, and a son's need to live his own life. (more...)

BWW Review: NEWSIES Brings Charm, Remarkable Talent to Dr. Phillips CenterBWW Review: NEWSIES Brings Charm, Remarkable Talent to Dr. Phillips Center
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 29, 2015

Admittedly, I am not in the target demographic for Disney's musical NEWSIES, running through February 1st at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. This musical, which concluded its two-and-a-half year Broadway run last fall, has inspired a legion of young, female fans who have dubbed themselves 'Fansies.' So while I might not be who the show is normally marketed towards, I left the Walt Disney Theatre on Opening Night completely infected by the optimism, athleticism, and heart of this movie-musical adaptation. Though far from being without fault, the score (which won a Tony for composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman), the script (by Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein), and the immense talent of the young ensemble made this a exceptionally enjoyable evening of entertainment. BWW Reviews: Theater Latte Da and Hennepin Theatre Trust Collaborate on a Spectacular and Poignant Re-Imagined OLIVER!BWW Reviews: Theater Latte Da and Hennepin Theatre Trust Collaborate on a Spectacular and Poignant Re-Imagined OLIVER!
by Jill Schafer - Feb 11, 2015

Theater Latte Da and Hennepin Theatre Trust have formed a beautiful partnership called 'Broadway Re-Imagined,' in which they combine the resources of the Trust with the creativity and innovation of Latte Da to produce a Broadway-sized musical with all local talent and that special Latte Da twist. After the powerful rock musical Aida and the brilliant Ivey Award-winning Cabaret, they return this year with Oliver!, the 1960 musical based on Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist. But don't let all those adorable moppets dancing around the stage and singing upbeat tunes fool you. Oliver! is not a light and fluffy happy musical, well, not solely anyway. It's also a dark and somber look at such serious issues as child abuse and neglect, the desperation of poverty, and violence. But fortunately, after all the death and darkness, the curtain call ends with a reprise of a happy number, so we can all leave the theater with that happy musical feeling. But perhaps we also leave with a deeper thought about the relevance and seriousness of what we just saw, wrapped up in a gorgeous musical theater package, to ponder further at a later date.
