BWW Reviews: NEWSIES Ensemble Makes Headlines at Winspear Opera House!BWW Reviews: NEWSIES Ensemble Makes Headlines at Winspear Opera House!
by Kyle West - May 2, 2015

As a preteen in 1992, thanks to a 'free week' of The Disney Channel, I became an expert on the working conditions of the 1899 newsboys of New York, and their famous conflict with newspaper giants William Randolph Hurst and Joseph Pulitzer. I also discovered a love for musical theatre, as I watched the dozens of acrobatic young men singing, dancing and exploding onto the streets of New York City as NEWSIES. When the tape I'd recorded the film on was eventually 'eaten' by my VHS player (and with Disney discontinuing distribution) my mother and I convinced Blockbuster to sell us their copy, once they acknowledged that we'd been the only rental for several months. When a DVD was eventually released the following decade, my mother immediately gifted me a copy, which I memorized word-for-word. NEWSIES finally made it's way to the stage in 2011, and I excitedly traveled to New Jersey for its premier, followed by two additional trips to see the production on Broadway. To say I'm a 'Fansie' may be an understatement, so I couldn't have been more excited to seize the day with the touring company earlier this week. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Above the Fold! Pulsating NEWSIES Storms the PantagesBWW Reviews: Above the Fold! Pulsating NEWSIES Storms the Pantages
by Don Grigware - Mar 28, 2015

In 1899 droves of newsboys from every borough of New York City banned together and went on strike against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other wealthy newspaper owners, in a crusade to save children from menial wages and physical abuse. This was a first, where uneducated street kids stood up to the big suits and won. In 1992 Disney created the movie Newsies that went on to become a humongous hit. In 2012 Harvey Fierstein, Alan Menken and Jack Feldman came to Broadway with a musical show they created based on the film. Under the Disney banner, the first national tour of Newsies is currently onstage at the Pantages. All I can say is run, don't walk, to purchase tickets. The Newsies ensemble pulsates from the moment the lights hit the stage. It will jolt you, fulfill you and make you jump for joy. (more...)

Broadway's Tony Award-winning production of Cinderella (2013) has a brand new book by Douglas Carter Beane and an expanded score of the glorious music of Rodgers & Hammerstein. As the musical based on the fairy tale possesses a more contemporary storyline, both Cinderella (Paige Faure) and Prince Topher (Andy Huntington Jones) are different - they are Orphans, whose similarities in character make them a perfect match. No more losing her Venetian glass slipper at the first act curtain, this Cinderella, with much help, love, support and encouragement from her fairy godmother (Kecia Lewis) is in control and journeys into the second act with a mission to make the 'Impossible' truly 'Possible'. The Zimmerli Art Museum Presents PICTURING WAR: SELECTIONS FROM THE ZIMMERLI ART MUSEUM COLLECTION, Thru 7/5The Zimmerli Art Museum Presents PICTURING WAR: SELECTIONS FROM THE ZIMMERLI ART MUSEUM COLLECTION, Thru 7/5
by BWW News Desk - Mar 13, 2015

While the topic of war inundates the media daily, scenes from the battlefields flash across multiple (and increasingly smaller) screens so quickly that viewers often do not have time to consider the true impact of seemingly never-ending conflicts. Picturing War: Selections from the Zimmerli Art Museum Collection, on view through July 5, provides visitors the opportunity to reflect on specific battles and how they factor into broader themes. With nearly 130 prints, paintings, photographs, and sculptures by more than 50 artists, the emphasis is on the daily lives of soldiers and civilians: their moments of turmoil, but also their compassion and determination. These artistic responses to the great civil and global wars of the modern era – some created on the frontline, others through the lens of history – capture the propaganda, the human reactions, and the aftermath. In a run-down house in North Philadelphia live two almost-feral orphaned brothers: the reclusive, sensitive Philip, sealed off in a world of tinned tuna and Errol Flynn movies, and Treat, a violent pickpocket and thief who steals to provide for his younger brother. Into this ferocious and funny world enters Harold, a mysterious, wealthy, middle-aged man who is kidnapped by Treat, but who soon turns the tables on the two brothers, changing forever the delicate power balance of their relationship. Both hilarious and heartbreaking, Orphans is a story of the universal love of a father for his son, and a son's need to live his own life. (more...)

You probably don't know this character- that's because she doesn't actually exist. She was an addition to the script's gaggle of 6 little Orphans (I believe our production had 12). (more...)
