BWW Review: NEWSIES Brings Charm, Remarkable Talent to Dr. Phillips CenterBWW Review: NEWSIES Brings Charm, Remarkable Talent to Dr. Phillips Center
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 29, 2015

Admittedly, I am not in the target demographic for Disney's musical NEWSIES, running through February 1st at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. This musical, which concluded its two-and-a-half year Broadway run last fall, has inspired a legion of young, female fans who have dubbed themselves 'Fansies.' So while I might not be who the show is normally marketed towards, I left the Walt Disney Theatre on Opening Night completely infected by the optimism, athleticism, and heart of this movie-musical adaptation. Though far from being without fault, the score (which won a Tony for composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman), the script (by Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein), and the immense talent of the young ensemble made this a exceptionally enjoyable evening of entertainment. BWW Reviews: Musical Theater Heritage's OLIVER! Steals the Hearts of Kansas CityBWW Reviews: Musical Theater Heritage's OLIVER! Steals the Hearts of Kansas City
by Steve Wilson - Dec 7, 2014

It amazes me how a musical performed with little or no scenery, props, or costumes, and on a small intimate stage can become one of the preeminent shows of the season. That is exactly what Oliver! accomplished on opening night Saturday December 6 at the Off Center Theatre in Kansas City. This achievement speaks volumes to the creative team of Musical Theater Heritage that labored to near perfection. (more...)

BWW Reviews: ANNIE Sparkles at the Fabulous FoxBWW Reviews: ANNIE Sparkles at the Fabulous Fox
by Chris Gibson - Dec 3, 2014

Harold Gray, the original creator of the cliff-hanging comic strip that features the pupil-less girl known as 'Little Orphan Annie', may be just a footnote in history, but most people are aware of the musical adaptation, ANNIE, of his creation that premiered in 1977. Even though it was reworked a couple of years ago, that version is not the one that's currently on tour. I didn't see it, so I have no clue what was changed, but I do know that this charming and delightful work by Thomas Meehan, with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin, still maintains its humor and heart with its heroine's search for love and acceptance during the darkest days of the depression. Nearly as Bad as You ThinkBWW Review: The ANNIE Remake is Bad, but Not Nearly as Bad as You Think
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 15, 2014

Full disclosure, I was completely ready to despise everything about the remake of ANNIE starring Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis. In fact, I had already written the lede in my head, and let me tell you, it was scathing. But, then I saw the movie, and was pleasantly surprised by how not completely horrible it was. Yes, it will probably still rank as one of the worst big screen musical adaptations of the past decade; just above the disastrous NINE; but there was plenty to appreciate for musical theatre lovers young and old.
