Making their West Coast debut, THE MIDTOWN MEN features four of the original cast members of The Jersey Boys in concert showcasing favorite hits of the 1960s. In advance of Moonlight Stage Productions' MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT this summer, the theatre will present a free screening of the hit movie the musical is based on: MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. Written in the late 1950's in a fine post-graduate frenzy, Kopit's play was inspired as much by the European avant-garde as by the angst of the Eisenhower years. Director Tyler Herman has done a great job in his first production, creating the anarchic, bizarre feel that Kopit's play requires, with Katie Wertz's surreal set and Jacy Barber's biologically-correct costumes (for the fish and plant life) creating just the right off-kilter atmosphere. The producers of Lanie Robertson's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill just announced a general rush policy. A limited number of rush tickets, which are subject to availability, can be purchased at the box office of the Circle in the Square when the box office opens for the day of the performance on a first-come-first-served basis. The box office of the Circle in the Square opens at 10am Monday through Saturday, and at noon on Sunday (starting March 30th). Rush tickets are $40 each and limited to two (2) tickets per customer. Horse Trade Theater Group in association with Moonlight Theatre Productions will present a special one-night only celebration of mothers of all ethnic backgrounds, with drama, storytelling, music, and song. The evening will feature Watching by Kelley Girod (Executive Producer of The Fire This Time Festival) about a Creole mother in Louisiana, with the one and only Lynda Gravatt (2004 Helen Hayes Outstanding Supporting Actress Award for Crowns) and Nathan James, directed by Kevin R. Free, and My Mother's Funeral, a dramatic monologue by Israela Margalit (Gold Medal NY Film/TV Festival) about her Jewish mother, with the formidable Lila Donnolo, directed by John-Martin Green. The show will also feature music for Mother's Day performed by the brilliant violinist Asi Matathias, the award-winning composer/keyboard player Oran Eldor (Rokem Composition Award) and contralto Marie-Claire (NAACP Honor for Talent and Inspiration). First produced by the women's theater company in 2004, the theatrical hour reminisces one version of a marriage over a lifetime. With the sparse scenery recreating a vision of somewhere in mid-19th century rural New Zealand, the production becomes an evening as the retro song claims: 'Love is lovelier the second time around.' The Washington Stage Guild completes its Season of Dreams with the area premiere of Simon Bent's ELLING, a whimsical comedy of the power of friendship when everyday life is an adventure. Bent's London hit is based on a quartet of novels by the Norwegian writer Ingvar Ambjornsen that was the source of an Oscar-nominated film in 2002. ELLING is the story of a pair of misfits who, after rooming together for years in an institution, are offered an independent life - if they can cope with it. Elling and Kjell Bjarne must learn to deal with the world and each other's fears and quirks, and Elling's discovery of literary ambition becomes a path to a 'normal' life. Along the way the two have a series of offbeat adventures as they struggle with bureaucracy, relationships, and their own demons. (more...)
