Steep Theatre to Open Season with Premiere of Hamish Linklater's THE CHEATSSteep Theatre to Open Season with Premiere of Hamish Linklater's THE CHEATS
by BWW News Desk - Sep 2, 2015

Steep Theatre is thrilled to launch their 15th season with the world premiere of Hamish Linklater's The Cheats.  Mr. Linklater, a celebrated and award-winning stage and film actor, made his playwriting debut in 2013 with the well-regarded piece The Vandal, which enjoyed an extended Off-Broadway run with the Flea Theater in New York City and subsequently made its Midwest premiere at Steep Theatre in October of 2014.  The Cheats, Mr. Linklater's much-anticipated second play after his promising debut, explores the way that we can hastily judge others while refusing to acknowledge our own flaws. The production will be helmed by one of Chicago's most sought after directors, Steep Ensemble Member Joanie Schultz. The Cheats opens on October 1st at Steep's Edgewater theatre, where the company has put together a string of hits, while bringing new work and new voices to Chicago. BWW Reviews: With His Smooth, Swinging Style, MARCUS GOLDHABER Is a Resonant Delight at 54 BelowBWW Reviews: With His Smooth, Swinging Style, MARCUS GOLDHABER Is a Resonant Delight at 54 Below
by Alix Cohen - Jul 27, 2015

Marcus Goldhaber wears his mantle lightly. Emulating such as Chet Baker, Hoagy Carmichael, and Fred Astaire—those artists who most often sounded nonchalant, yet polished-- the vocalist offers pared down (not simplistic) interpretations of American Songbook/jazz numbers with emotional translucence, as well as authoring his own fine contributions to the oeuvre. I dare you to distinguish those from songs originating in the 1940s and 1950s. With Free and Easy: Livin' on Swing Street at 54 Below (July 25), Goldhaber takes us on a personal walking tour of musical influence. Material is varied yet sustains a distinct style. The vocalist is unhurried (even when up-tempo), mindful of lyrics, and elegantly restrained. He seems comfortable on stage and refreshingly sincere. (more...)

BWW Reviews: MUSIC MAN Marches Melodically Onto Moonlight StageBWW Reviews: MUSIC MAN Marches Melodically Onto Moonlight Stage
by Don Grigware - Jul 17, 2015

What do the 1950s have in common with 1912? Ages of innocence, both. When Meredith Willson wrote his story with Franklin Lacey about a con artist bamboozling an Iowa town in 1912, which formed the substance of his musical The Music Man (1957), the effect became like that of N. Richard Nash's The Rainmaker. People were jubilant, ecstatic and welcomed Professor Harold Hill, as they craved a good old-fashioned love story coated with ironic excitement. He was a charmer, and they saw way past his bad side. Now in a spirited new production at Moonlight Amphitheatre, Vista , the company pulls out all the stops and yet presents a delightfully down.to.earth show that keeps the flavor of Meredith Willson in tact. With fast-paced direction from John Vaughn and a splendid cast led by David Engel as Hill , The Music Man offers an unrealistic yet refreshing look at the way life should be. (more...)

TARZAN THE MUSICAL is the latest winner in a string of ambitious musicals by the Dawson producing team at 3-D Theatricals (Gretchen, Daniel, Jeannette and T.J.). Perhaps it isn't surprising that a family run company would know the kind of heart it takes to bring to life a Disney adventure musical about the power of family and finding one's place in the world. In any case, TARZAN is one big show that succeeds beautifully under their care. (more...)
