CUNY Dance Initiative Announces Fall 2016 Events

Seven choreographers/companies will present world premieres. Bessie Award-winning performer Caleb Teicher will premiere his full-length Variations, set to Glenn Gould's iconic recording of Bach's "Goldberg Variations." Gabrielle Lamb will present a new group work inspired by artist Soghra Khurasani's woodblock prints, Chloe Arnold's Apartment 33 debuts, and Dzul Dance's new work, presented during Hispanic Heritage Month, explores the idea of ritual as a transformative experience via pre-Hispanic rites of passage. The fall season also includes premieres and performances by CDI artists Azul Dance Theatre, Lauren Cox/Humans Collective andMAWU, and showings by mwest dances, luciana achugar, and Urban Bush Women. Program details and schedule follow. The international smash hit musical, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is set on December 4, 1956, when an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together. Sam Phillips, the "Father of Rock 'n' Roll" who was responsible for launching the careers of each icon, brought the four legendary musicians together at the Sun Records studio in Memphis for the first and only time. The Globe and Mail stated, 'Craig Lucas (also a Tony winner for The Light in the Piazza) wrote the adaptation - which moves part of the action to South Africa, while the songs were by the composer/lyricist team David Shire and Richard Maltby Jr., whose Broadway outings are 1983's Baby and 1996's Big. Heidi Blickenstaff (Broadway's Something Rotten!) and Emma Hunton (Broadway's Spring Awakening) are set to star as mother and daughter in the world premiere production of the new musical Freaky Friday at Signature Theatre. The musical, based on the beloved 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and hit Disney films and developed by Disney Theatrical Productions expressly for licensing to theatres, features a book byBridget Carpenter, music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Brian Yorkey. This premiere production will be directed byChristopher Ashley with choreography by Sergio Trujillo. Freaky Friday will run from October 4 - November 13 in Signature Theatre's MAX Theatre.
