From its stunning Broadway premiere in 1968, Hair defined the "rock musical," exuberantly celebrating the hippie counterculture, anti-war movement and sexual revolution of the 1960s with a rainbow score of hits - including "Aquarius," "Good Morning Starshine," and "Easy to be Hard" - that have become ingrained in pop culture. Let down your long, beautiful hair, pull out the tie-dye and celebrate this groundbreaking American journey as we "Let the Sunshine In!"

HAIR features a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot, and tells the story of a group of young Americans searching for love and peace during the Vietnam era, HAIR is a timeless portrait of a movement that changed the world. Its groundbreaking rock score paved the way for some of the greatest musicals of our time. The 2009 revival, directed by Diane Paulus, won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle also honored the production with their 2009 award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.

Indiana University Press Releases SEX AND UNISEX by Jo B. PaolettiIndiana University Press Releases SEX AND UNISEX by Jo B. Paoletti
by BWW News Desk - Mar 3, 2015

Notorious as much for its fashion as for its music, the 1960s and 1970s produced provocative fashion trends that reflected the rising wave of gender politics and the sexual revolution. In an era when gender stereotypes were questioned and dismantled, and when the feminist and gay rights movements were gaining momentum and a voice, the fashion industry responded in kind. Designers from Paris to Hollywood imagined a future of equality and androgyny. The unisex movement affected all ages, with adult fashions trickling down to school-aged children and clothing for infants. Between 1965 and 1975, girls and women began wearing pants to school; boys enjoyed a brief 'peacock revolution,' sporting bold colors and patterns; and legal battles were fought over Hair style and length. However, with the advent of Diane Von Furstenberg's wrap dress and the launch of Victoria's Secret, by the mid-1980s, unisex styles were nearly completely abandoned. Jo B. Paoletti traces the trajectory of unisex fashion against the backdrop of the popular issues of the day—from contraception access to girls' participation in sports. Combing mass-market catalogs, newspaper and magazine articles, cartoons, and trade publications for signs of the fashion debates, Paoletti provides a multigenerational study of the 'white space' between (or beyond) masculine and feminine. BWW Reviews: THE HISTORY BOYS at WOOLFE STREET PLAYHOUSEBWW Reviews: THE HISTORY BOYS at WOOLFE STREET PLAYHOUSE
by haydn haring - Mar 2, 2015

It won't stop raining. Whenever I'm at Woolfe Street, we stand outside, rain or shine and talk. Before a show, on breaks, during intermission and after. We usually discuss the play in question, whether it is a performance or rehearsal. Most of us have worked together. If we haven't worked together, then we've seen each other perform. And we're all local. We're talking about more theatre. There's something ancient about it, especially when its raining. That area of downtown Charleston reminds me a lot of London- kind of industrial- with the cold and the smell of rain. Whenever I'm there (or in any theater really) I feel like I'm a part of something lasting, something bigger than myself. Sierra- the stage manager- usually calls us inside and so it goes. Anyway, its familiar. And its raining. (more...)

"…the plot revolves around the lives of the four March daughters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy - and follows their triumphs and tragedies as they grow up, fall in love, and face life." Per the playbill comes a simple, but altogether truthful, analysis of the lengthy goings on of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel Little Women. In playwright Thomas Hischak's stage adaptation, Alcott's timeless work remains as close to the original text as one could hope. In this particular version, however, Jo takes on the role of narrator which provides an entirely new dynamic to a work that many know quite well. (more...)
