Opening to the public on November 23, 2013, Boris Mikhailov: Four Decades will explore the full career of one of the leading photographers from the former Soviet Union. For over 30 years, Ukranian-born Mikhailov has investigated the fate of the individual within the framework of history, making life-size color photographs that reveal the ever-widening gulf between public ideology and private existence in post-communist Eastern Europe. Deeply rooted in the tradition of social study and commentary, Mikhailov's work locates its power in deep engagement with its subjects. His works are portraits that draw the viewer into a world of humor, lust, vulnerability, survival, aging, and death -- a realm that is foreign and specific, but somehow disturbingly close. (more...)

'The Lower Depths' by Maxim Gorky is a powerful classical Russian play about a group of hilarious, downtrodden lodgers in a boarding house. Restless Books Releases New Books THE UNDERGROUND and THE ISRAELI REPUBLICRestless Books Releases New Books THE UNDERGROUND and THE ISRAELI REPUBLIC
by BWW News Desk - Dec 13, 2013

The story of a half-African, half-Siberian child growing up in the fast-changing Moscow of the 1980s, The Underground has been called one of the 'ten best Russian novels of the 21st Century' (Continent Magazine). In this subtle and atmospheric novel, exiled Uzbek author and BBC journalist Hamid Ismailov provides a tour of the Soviet capital, on the surface and beneath, in the years before the fall. Though deeply engaged with great Russian authors of the past-Dostoyevsky, Turgenyev, Gorky, Nabokov, and above all, Pushkin-Ismailov is an emerging master of a new kind of Russian writing that revels in the sordid reality and diverse composition of the country today.
