by BWW News Desk - Oct 8, 2014

Frank Sinatra is the most beloved and admired singer of our lifetime. He sold 150 million records and won 11 Grammy Awards, but that hardly begins to tell his story. 54 Below will honor Francis Albert Sinatra with an extraordinary evening of his most famous hits from throughout his career. The concert will offer Sinatra's early tunes like 'The Coffee Song,' mid-career hits like 'All the Way,' and 'Come Fly with Me,' and from there to the classic years with songs like 'It Was a Very Good Year,' and 'My Way.' Fascinating and little-known Sinatra anecdotes will pepper the evening, but the show will ultimately be all about the music, highlighting his greatest hits. The stars who sing his songs will be among the best and the brightest America has to offer. And most important, the songs will be performed in the style that made them famous by Sinatra in the first place. Simply put, this will be an unforgettable tribute to America's greatest star. Photo Coverage: The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra Plays BirdlandPhoto Coverage: The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra Plays Birdland
by Stephen Sorokoff - May 8, 2015

Birdland is 63, The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra is 80, and  Frank Sinatra is 100.  Gianni Valenti, Birdland owner announced the orchestra and the swinging engine of the Basie Band blasted off with "Come Fly with Me" at the "Jazz Corner of the World" last night. Regardless of how good the fidelity is on your Beats Headphones and McIntosh Amplifier, it doesn't come close to the sound being heard on 44th Street. The original charts might have some wear and tear from page turning by Basie musicians over the years, but the music was clear, precise, and  exciting as when the band made their home at Birdland in the 1950's. Scotty Barnhart is now the Director of The Count Basie Orchestra which has won 18 Grammy Awards and 20 Downbeat and Jazz Times polls. He follows in a long line of Jazz greats that have led the orchestra since Basie's passing in 1984. Thad Jones, Frank Foster, Brover Mitchell, Bill Hughes, and Dennis Mackrel have been prior directors.  Scotty pointed out that the band might have been formed in 1935, but they are very current and are on Facebook, and have a great website. Carmen Bradford, a Basie choice supplied the vocals.  (more...)

BWW Reviews: A Big Shout Out to GMCLA and VEGAS, BABY!BWW Reviews: A Big Shout Out to GMCLA and VEGAS, BABY!
by Don Grigware - Jun 23, 2015

As part of season 36, GMCLA (Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles) outdid themselves in the presentation of their summer show Vegas, Baby! the weekend of June 20-21 at the Alex Theatre, Glendale. It was a fun, fun production like those of yesteryear, which featured much more than just the group's singing talent. Choreographers Billy Rugh and Michelle Benton had small groups from the chorus dancing their tushes off in several scenarios including a salute to showgirls (Cy Coleman's and Dorothy Fields' 'Pretty Legs'/'Big Spender'), gambling fever ('Luck Be a Lady'), a tribute to Rocky and Vegas boxing ('Rocky Medley'), and just a plain old mischievous look at female as well as scantily clad male dancers shimmying those strip club poles ('She Works Hard for the Money'). When BroadwayWorld.com Cabaret Reviewer Billie Roe was invited to the CabaretFest 2015 Provincetown scheduled for June 4-7, it was to attend as a performer, not necessarily as a reviewer. But we couldn't resist the opportunity to have Billie at least report on some aspects of the long, event-filled weekend and record some of her impressions in something akin to a diary. Based on Billie's descriptive account here, this year's Cabaret Festival in Provincetown, MA, sounds like one of the cabaret highlights of the year. (more...)

by Alix Cohen - Jan 9, 2015

Frances Albert (Frank) Sinatra (1915-1998) was arguably one of the most important vocalists of 20th century. The Hoboken, New Jersey native began as a boy singer with big band leaders Harry James and Tommy Dorsey, became a heartthrob to bobbysoxers, a headliner in nightclubs during their heyday, and was one of the best selling recording artists of all time. Sinatra's illusively relaxed phrasing was as unique as the quality of swing he made popular. This centennial year of his birth will be filled with tributes. 'You beat the rush,' Producer/Writer/Host Scott Siegel quipped from a podium last night during the variety tribute show The Sinatra Century at 54 Below. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Jan 5, 2015

'Jimmy Van Heusen Swinging on a Star,' by Christopher A. Coppula, is the first official biography of the prolific composer James Van Heusen. Van Heusen wrote over 1,000 songs, including 50 standards. He is tied for most Academy Awards for Best Original Song. Van Heusen composed music for 5 of the 6 Road movies starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. You know his music, but chances are you don't know the composer behind such hits as Swinging on a Star, All the Way, Moonlight Becomes You, Love and Marriage, High Hopes, Come Fly with Me, and Imagination. While his legacy is inextricably linked with that of his best friend Frank Sinatra, Van Heusen was much more. Starting his career while in high school, Van Heusen worked from radio to the Cotton Club, from song plugger to songwriter, from New York to Hollywood. He was a brilliant musician, ware hero, and good and generous man (more...)
