Exquisitely timed for the final run to the White House, Keegan Theatre 's production of 'What We're Up Against' is a whomping good time. BWW Review: Strong Performances Distinguish Portland Players' BONNIE AND CLYDE
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Sep 26, 2016

Portland Players opened its 86th season with an intense production of the Ivan Menchell-Don Black-Frank Wildhorn musical, Bonnie and Clyde, about the legendary Depression-era American outlaws. The 2009 musical theatre retelling of the short and violent lives of this pair, who robbed banks and left scores of dead victims in their wake as they evaded the law in a misguided quest for notoriety, puts a romantic spin on their legend at the same time that it does not side step the grittier aspects of this tale. by Victoria Ordin - Sep 15, 2016

For her soulful, imaginative rendering of jazz, pop, and R&B music, Los Angeles native and septuple MAC Award winner Natalie Douglas has earned raves for two decades from American and British critics alike. Superlatives like 'transcendent,' 'heart-stopping,' and '[the] greatest' pepper reviews both of her live performances and work in the studio. Douglas' new show, STEVIE SONGS, which marked her 50th performance at Birdland, made clear why Clive Davis of The New York Times wrote, 'By the end [of a show], you want to her to carry on into the small hours.' BWW Review: Forever Entertaining FANTISTICKS Receives a Sterling Production at Pasadena Playhouse
by Don Grigware - Sep 13, 2016

The longest running musical in the world The Fantasticks is always at its best when produced and performed with simplicity. When I first saw it in New York in the 60s, it was performed in a cabaret space against a brick wall, with the suspension of a paper moon above. You can't get much simpler than that. In the current revival at the Pasadena Playhouse, the setting is bigger: a dilapidated, war-torn theatre in Southern California, shuttered since 1969, into which the actors enter to create art. The space may be bigger than the original, but the fine work on display maintains simplicity, especially in its message of love. This is a stunning production, one of the very best I have seen, with a magnificent interracial cast under the seamless direction of Seema Sueko. (more...)

BWW Review: SISTER ACT, New Alexandra Theatre, 12 September 2016
by Emma Cann - Sep 13, 2016

Jamie Wilson and the Leicester Curve's new production of Sister Act contains all of the ingredients for a smash-hit musical: a star director, a celebrity lead, a well-known, beloved story based on a popular film, and a plethora of sequins and catchy tunes.  Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act follows the story of Deloris Van Cartier, an aspiring Philadelphia club singer. When Doloris witnesses her mobster boyfriend Curtis commit murder, she rushes to the police and old high school friend, Eddie, hides her in the one place she surely won't be found: a convent. The Mother Superior abhors Deloris' outspoken and extravagant nature. However, Deloris soon forms a close bond with the other sisters, transforming their pitiful choir with soul and funk versions of their usual hymns. When the convent choir's growing popularity puts Deloris' safety at risk, the sisters and even Mother Superior risk everything to protect her.  (more...)
