BWW Review: The Rep's World Premiere Sizzles in SIRENS OF SONG and Woos Women to UniteBWW Review: The Rep's World Premiere Sizzles in SIRENS OF SONG and Woos Women to Unite
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Mar 31, 2016

Women of the World unite for Milwaukee Rep's poetic, powerful world premiere titled Sirens of Song featuring the musical history through a women's perspective sung through familiar melodies of the 20th century. While the music begins in December 1901 with the Daughters of Freedom, the Stackner Cabaret provides the ultimate setting for Scenic Designer Scott Davis' abandoned clothing shop filled with manikins dressed in period costumes-all surrounded by a grand, gilt broken picture frame where these three actors make their Rep debuts. A revue written by Kevin Ramsey and his niece Pearl Ramsey, the two collaborators weave world events through a century worth of popular music. by Don Grigware - Mar 31, 2016

Irish actress Lisa Dwan, the premier interpreter of Samuel Beckett, is about to step down from the position this spring, but before she does, she will make  an appearance with the Beckett Trilogy at the The Broad Stage in Santa Monica in April. Why is this the first time that all 3 plays have been performed together? Well I guess one reason is that Not I is rarely performed and Footfalls has never been performed by one actress playing both roles of Mother (off stage) and May (on stage), and to my knowledge no other actress has tried to perform all three roles in one evening. Up until I tried it, I didn't even think it was possible.  (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Apr 5, 2016

Playwright Francis Weiss Rabkin and company Tight Braid Group present the interdisciplinary play Won't Be a Ghost. Growing out of several years of development, Won't Be a Ghost entwines the stories of two queer truth-tellers: Magnus Hirschfeld, early sexologist and gay rights advocate, and US Army whistleblower, Chelsea Manning. Taking structural cues from Ancient Greek tragedies, a chorus guides the audience from the gardens of Hirschfeld's Weimar-era Institute for Sexual Science to a US Army base in Iraq, where Manning tells her story via instant messenger.  Refusing martyrdom, they find grace in the unjust through rituals of healing.
