The Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Odyssey Opera Present the THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY

Two of Boston's leading musical ensembles—the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) and Odyssey Opera—present Lowell Liebermann's opera The Picture of Dorian Gray (1995) in a semi-staged production. Conductor Gil Rose leads the acclaimed musicians of BMOP and Odyssey Opera's cast of stellar vocal soloists in Liebermann's version of Oscar Wilde's classic novel of philosophical horror. Boston's own Jon Jurgens, hailed as an “affable, open-throated Italian tenor” by Opera News, will perform the title role of Dorian Gray. (more...)

New Book Series From Brian S. Ference is Launched

Dorian Gray returns with an unusual twist in a new book series 'The Wolf of Dorian Gray'. Self-publishing indie author Brian S. Ference has released the first book subtitled 'A Werewolf Spawned by the Evil of Man' with worldwide distribution. He is simultaneously launching a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to fund the creation of the second book. Platinum backers of the campaign will have their names and descriptions written in as characters to the second book 'Purgatory of the Werewolf'. Odyssey Opera Performs Rare Gilbert & Sullivan Work 6/2-3

Described as “one of the East Coast's most exciting and best opera companies (The Arts Fuse),” Odyssey Opera completes its Wilde Opera Nights series, a season-long exploration of operatic works inspired by the writings and world of Oscar Wilde. For two nights, Odyssey Opera presents a fully-staged performance of Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert's early hit, Patience; or, Bunthorne's Bride (1881). Inspired by the aesthetes of Victorian England of the late 1800s, this two-act comic opera delves into the world that Wilde skewered with his pen. Directed by Frank Kelley, with conductor Gil Rose and full orchestra and chorus, Patience welcomes back several Odyssey Opera alumni to the stage including Aaron Engrebreth (baritone) as Reginald Bunthorne and Sara Heaton (soprano) as Patience.  (more...)

Theatr Clwyd Announces 2017 Summer and Autumn Seasons

As she completes her first year as Artistic Director of Theatr Clwyd, Tamara Harvey today announces the 2017 Summer and Autumn seasons for the company. These include four world premieres; BoHo, a co-production with Hijinx Theatre which features both learning disabled and non-disabled actors, and, after a successful collaboration on the production of Love Lies and Taxidermy, Theatr Clwyd reunites with Paines Plough to open the 2017 Roundabout Season with co-productions of Black Mountain, Out Of Love and How To Be A Kid in collaboration with the Orange Tree Theatre. The Theatr Clwyd and Sheffield Theatres co-production of a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, by Welsh Playwright Peter Gill, will be directed by Harvey and will open at Clwyd from the 21 September ahead of transferring to Sheffield Theatres as part of Robert Hastie's inaugural season. The Vanity is a stylized, darkly humorous, period melodrama, which plays like a marriage of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Sunset Boulevard and Valley of the Dolls full of high drama and dirty secrets. It's 1947 and Julian Gray, a beautiful but sheltered young Plantation heir decides to start a new life in Hollywood. He finds himself the object of all sorts of hungry attention and the great director Hilton Wheeler casts him as the lead in a major motion picture. In spite of a promising future as a movie star, Julian falls in love with Stella, a makeup girl on the set of his first film. All hell breaks loose, when Julian inherits a mysterious Victorian vanity table from a distant, unknown relative and the vanity is possessed by a powerful demon. Julian is offered the chance to maintain his infamous good looks indefinitely, as long as he agrees to forsake love in favor of hedonistic pleasure. Mr. Gray is faced with an impossible choice, and is tempted in all directions by an array of technicolor characters. (more...)
