At the center of the story is a Thai/Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant, The Golden Dragon, where a young Chinese man suffering from an oversensitive incisor sparks a whacked and weird series of interconnected stories. One actor remains Dorian Gray, while the rest of the company morphs into the people, ideas, and ghosts of Dorian's life as his grip on sanity loosens. How curious and curiouser an English children's fantasy written in 1865 for three sisters has been translated into 174 languages and never been out of print since, never once. Lewis Carroll's surreal tale 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,' usually shortened to 'Alice in Wonderland,' appears on stage at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts when Artistic Director Michael Pink and Milwaukee Ballet present their version of Alice in Wonderland, which first premiered at the Washington Ballet in 2012, With this immense production of Alice, MKE Ballet Costume Manager Mary Piering completes 32 years in the company's costume shop at 5th and National to refit the more than 120 costumes for the one weekend only performances. A visit to the shop the week of rehearsals found Piering stitching on a small headpiece, putting the finishing touches on the entire cast's wardrobe. (more...)

Coming this February, Milwaukee Ballet and Artistic Director Michael Pink introduce their World Premiere ballet Dorian Gray. Based on the British 1980 novel by Oscar Wilde, Pink originally debuted another version of this story in Augsburg, Germany two years ago. This year in Milwaukee, PInk commissioned a new score by Philip Feeney, scenic and costume designs by Todd Edward Ivins, and returns Emmy award-winning Lighting Designer David Grill to envision the ominous story.. Grill will be at Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, February 7, and then 'after lighting Coldplay will light the Milwaukee Ballet.' This tour-de-force creative collaboration underscores fresh choreography by Pink to produce another full-length ballet performed for the first time in the Historic Pabst Theater over two full winter weekends. The Vanity is a stylized, darkly humorous, period melodrama, which plays like a marriage of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Sunset Boulevard and Valley of the Dolls full of high drama and dirty secrets. It's 1947 and Julian Gray, a beautiful but sheltered young Plantation heir decides to start a new life in Hollywood. He finds himself the object of all sorts of hungry attention and the great director Hilton Wheeler casts him as the lead in a major motion picture. In spite of a promising future as a movie star, Julian falls in love with Stella, a makeup girl on the set of his first film. All hell breaks loose, when Julian inherits a mysterious Victorian vanity table from a distant, unknown relative and the vanity is possessed by a powerful demon. Julian is offered the chance to maintain his infamous good looks indefinitely, as long as he agrees to forsake love in favor of hedonistic pleasure.
