Theatre @ Boston Court's THE GOLDEN DRAGON to Open This WeekendTheatre @ Boston Court's THE GOLDEN DRAGON to Open This Weekend
by BWW News Desk - May 2, 2016

What starts out as a simple toothache evolves into a dizzying chain of events as a group of disparate people, played by a cast of five who assume many roles indiscriminate of age, gender, and race, struggle to make connections in an increasingly isolated world. At the center of the story is a Thai/Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant, The Golden Dragon, where a young Chinese man suffering from an oversensitive incisor sparks a whacked and weird series of interconnected stories. A delicious mixture of epic theatre, bizarre comedy, poetry, and fable combine to create this fabulous pho. (more...)

Slipstream Theatre Initiative to Present THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAYSlipstream Theatre Initiative to Present THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY
by BWW News Desk - May 2, 2016

'Nothing can cure the soul but the senses, just as nothing can cure the senses but the soul.' Join Slipstream as we explore Oscar Wilde's masterpiece through a new lens. Set during the golden years of Hollywood, a young man unwittingly trades his soul for immortality, and discovers the actual price of fame. This surreal look into the lines that separate and blur the notions of morality versus mortality is done with four actors. One actor remains Dorian Gray, while the rest of the company morphs into the people, ideas, and ghosts of Dorian's life as his grip on sanity loosens. Just how long can a person remain an ideal before it starts to consume him whole, and how many people are destroyed in the process? What is the true cost of eternal youth? (more...)

by Don Grigware - Mar 14, 2016

How often do you see an American western onstage? Especially one that was a famous John Ford film in 1952 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Both the film and the stage play are adapted from a short story by Dorothy Johnson about the American west in 1890-1910. The names of the characters in the film are slightly different from those in the play, but the plot is basically the same. What seem to matter more than plot are the historical, cultural, political themes that the story exudes. Now onstage at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, in its American premiere, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is helmed by uber skilled director Jenny Sullivan and boasts a stellar cast, but you only have one more week to catch it, through March 20. BWW Review: THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE at Rubicon Theatre CompanyBWW Review: THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE at Rubicon Theatre Company
by Cary Ginell - Mar 10, 2016

John Ford's 1962 film, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, is one of motion picture's all-time classic westerns. So when I heard that a play version was making its American premiere at the Rubicon Theatre Company in Ventura, I got more than just a little excited. Envisioning the tensions seen on the screen in epic portrayals by Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, and Lee Marvin promised to be riveting theater. Unfortunately, the play version was taken not from the screenplay by James Warner Bellah and Willis Goldbeck (it was unavailable) but an adaptation by British playwright Joshua Compton from Dorothy M. Johnson's original short story, and although the Rubicon has created a fabulous setting, marvelous performances from all of the actors, and an atmospheric, on-stage musical tableau by Trevor Wheetman, the result is simply not as compelling as the movie. This year in Milwaukee, PInk commissioned a new score by Philip Feeney, scenic and costume designs by Todd Edward Ivins, and returns Emmy award-winning Lighting Designer David Grill to envision the ominous story.. Grill will be at Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, February 7, and then 'after lighting Coldplay will light the Milwaukee Ballet.' If as Oscar Wilde wrote, 'Beauty is a form of genius, indeed a higher form of genius, and needs no explanation,' the Milwaukee Ballet and Michael PInk affirm this statement with a resounding performance of their World Premiere ballet Dorian Gray. Based on Wilde's late 19th century novella, Pink and his 'dream team,'--Lighting Designer David Grill, Composer Philip Fenney and Costume/Scenic Designer Todd Edward Ivins--sparked magical genius in the first full length ballet staged in the Historic Pabst Theater. Ivins spoke the essence of the moment when he stated, 'A historic occasion in a historic theater.' (more...)
