Do I Hear a Waltz?

Leona, an unmarried American secretary 'of a certain age,' goes on a vacation to Venice where, under the spell of that enchanted city, she falls in love. The gentleman is an attractive, middle-aged shopkeeper, whose attentions give flight to her deepest dreams of romance. Too soon, however, he openly informs her that he is a contented family man, and Leona's hopes are dashed. She can, for a short time, harness romance, yet realizes that such a relationship would have nowhere to go. Still, might it be better than never having loved at all? This timeless story, which is the basis of the movie 'Summertime' starring Katharine Hepburn, remains a bittersweet testament to the complexities of the heart.

When Broadway actress Emily Skinner takes the stage and opens 42nd Street Moon's current offering, the next two hours look bright and worthwhile. Venice, Italy, as displayed on stage by set designer Hector Zavala promises magical, mystical miracles. Yet as the musical progresses, rather slowly at that, the script turns Skinner's immediately likeable character into a flawed one, condemned for what may seem to many like reasonable judgment calls. Squabbalogic's production of SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM helps to answer the question that the NEW YORK magazine posed in 1994, "Is Stephen Sondheim God?". The revue of Sondheim's work, originally conceived and directed in 2010 by James Lapine, who has had a long connection with the composer, takes the audience on a journey through Sondheim's life, his creations, and creative process, all narrated by Sondheim himself by way of video recordings and archive footage projected onto a large screen above the stage. Judy Kuhn, a multiple nominee for both Tony and Drama Desk Awards, celebrated three generations of songwriting Rodgers in her American Songbook debut at Lincoln Center's Appel Room on February 4: The legendary Richard Rodgers, his daughter Mary Rodgers, and grandson Adam Guettel. In the course of the evening, we moved back and forth from iconic, powerfully melodic songs to more consistently lighthearted and tender fare to contemporary, operetta-like material. BWW Reviews: Delightful Musical Revue Rings in Christmas at the GoodBWW Reviews: Delightful Musical Revue Rings in Christmas at the Good
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Dec 8, 2014

Portland's Good Theater celebrated Christmas with a delightfully conceived and stylishly performed musical revue, Broadway at the Good Theater, created and directed by Brian P. Allen. Devoted to the music of the 60s and showcasing both Broadway show tunes and other iconic popular melodies, this almost forty-song evening flows seamlessly through the diverse music of the decade. Allen's selection of numbers reads like an index to the masterpieces of that tumultuous decade, and yet, he is astute in selecting some of the lesser-known production numbers together with the undeniable blockbusters. Moreover, he knows how to weave them together subtly to chronicle an era, and he provides musical staging that is characterful, but just right for the context. (more...)
