by Alix Cohen - May 12, 2015

Tribute shows to iconic entertainers celebrating a centennial birthday in 2015 seem to be all the rage this year. But nobody has been celebrated more in cabaret variety shows than Frank Sinatra—and rightly so. Wall Street Journal entertainment columnist Will Friedwald, also a producer and author who wrote the 1997 book Sinatra! The Song Is You—A Singer's Art, this past Saturday presented the biggest (and longest) tribute to “Ol' Blue Eyes” so far this year with Sinatra-Thon at The Cutting Room (co-curated with performer Cary Hoffman), a potpourri of events running from 10 am to an after-midnight jam, and which included varied live entertainment, rare film clips, and panel discussions. by BWW News Desk - Mar 17, 2015

This April, Carnegie Hall presents the preeminent a cappella vocal ensemble The Tallis Scholars in two events as part of its month-long Before Bach focus. From April 13 to 17, the group and its director Peter Phillips lead a workshop for 37 pre-professional singers presented by Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute on choral masterworks of the Renaissance. Over five days, Mr. Phillips and members of The Tallis Scholars prepare the singers to join them in a program to include a composite mass setting drawn from Antoine Brumel's dramatic Missa Et ecce terrae motus (the 'Earthquake' Mass) with Tomas Luis de Victoria's Missa Salve regina, and concluding with Thomas Tallis's sonorous 40-part motet 'Spem in alium,' recently featured in the book and film adaptation of E.L. James's best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey. The workshop culminates with a performance by The Tallis Scholars and the workshop participants on Friday, April 17 at 8:00 p.m. at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. The program also features works by Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Weelkes, Robert Cowper, and John Sheppard. (more...)

BWW Reviews: South Coast Rep Stages World Premiere of Rajiv Joseph's MR. WOLFBWW Reviews: South Coast Rep Stages World Premiere of Rajiv Joseph's MR. WOLF
by Michael L. Quintos - Apr 27, 2015

South Coast Repertory's latest offering, MR. WOLF---now on stage in Costa Mesa through May 3---is a high-quality presentation of an intriguingly audacious if not quite fully-gestated new world premiere play from Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph, the playwright behind the celebrated BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO. In Mr. Joseph's enticing new drama, the play employs a ripped-from-the-headlines plot that feels more like a stand-alone episode of any given TV procedural drama, which, unfortunately, by their very nature leaves very little room for real character development, yet provides enough juicy (and at times soapy) melodrama to pique an interested audience.
