Set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York in September 1937, this coming of age comedy focuses, thru the eyes of its narrator, 15-year old Eugene Morris Jerome, writer-to-be and alternately perplexed and perceptive observer and guide, on life with the Jerome family. Eugene is a Polish Jewish American teenager who experiences puberty, sexual awakening and a search for identity as he tries to deal with his Depression-era family. Eugene, his parents, Kate and Jack, and his brother Stanley have shared their home for the last three years with Kate's sister Blanche and her two daughters Nora and Laurie since the death of their father. This extended family is troubled by illness, unemployment, poverty, deep resentments and foreboding signs of World War II, but as portrayed by Neil Simon, their lives are neither miserable or pitiful. The family meets their challenges with innocence, dignity, warmth, vigor and spirit, showing that life, at once humorous and poignant, is something to celebrate by all. "Simultaneously poignant and funny. An outstanding show!" - Variety. "A hilarious comedy... A delightful and enriching experience." -CBS-TV

BWW Reviews: Portland Stage Presents Probing and Poignant BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Sep 28, 2014

Portland Stage opened its 2014-2015 season with a probing and poignant production of Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs, the first of Simon's so-called 'Eugene Trilogy.' The 1983 autobiographical reminiscence tells the story of a Jewish boy growing up in a colorful, often dysfunctional extended family in Brooklyn during the Depression. That Simon's play retains so much of its original impact is a tribute to his gifts as a playwright, especially his ability to mingle humor and pain in the crucible of memory. Portland Stage has mounted an attractive, atmospheric production which owes no small measure of its appeal to Brittany Vasta's sprawling, multi-tiered set, comprised of small eclectically cluttered cubbies evoking the straitened family circumstances. Director Samuel Buggeln makes imaginative use of the space as he draws taut, expressive performances from each of the seven actors, who are all virtually note perfect in capturing the Brooklyn accents. BWW Reviews: OKLAHOMA! Kicks off Torrance Theatre Company's 15th Anniversary Season in Great Style
by Shari Barrett - Aug 24, 2014

Torrance Theatre Company celebrates its 15th anniversary by saddling up at the James Armstrong Theatre and presenting OKLAHOMA! with music and lyrics by one of Broadway's most influential duos, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Based on Lynn Riggs' stage play, Green Grow the Lilacs, OKLAHOMA! marked the duo's first collaboration and set the standard for modern musical theatre. Although not the first musical to tell a story of emotional depth and psychological complexity, OKLAHOMA! introduced a number of new storytelling elements and techniques including the use of song and dance to convey plot and character rather than act as a diversion from the story, and the firm integration of every song into the plot-line. And most important, they introduced a new element to musical theatre: social commentary. (more...)
