Previews begin Tuesday, October 21 in advance of an Official Opening Night on Thursday, November 6. Just last night, he New Group just honored Founding Artistic Director Scott Elliott and celebrated its 20th Anniversary season. Scott Elliott is an award-winning stage director, filmmaker and the founding Artistic Director of The New Group, where he recently directed the critically acclaimed revival of David Rabe's Sticks and Bones. At The New Group, he has directed world premieres by Thomas Bradshaw, Ayub Khan Din, Francine Volpe, Erika Sheffer and Tommy Nohilly; and the world premiere of the 2010 musical The Kid (Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical; Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Award nominations for Outstanding Musical). Other credits include The New Group's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie starring Cynthia Nixon; David Rabe's Hurlyburly; and numerous collaborations with Ayub Khan Din, Wallace Shawn and Mike Leigh. Broadway credits include Present Laughter, Barefoot in the Park, The Threepenny Opera, The Women and Three Sisters. Theatre Communications Group (TCG) has announced the publication of A Master Builder by Henrik Ibsen, translated and adapted by Wallace Shawn. Shawn's version of the play was used by legendary director (and Shawn's frequent collaborator) Andre Gregory during 15 years of work on a theatrical production which, as of 2014, has not been produced in a theatre. Instead, it was made into a film by Jonathan Demme (Stop Making Sense, The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia), with a cast that includes Shawn, Gregory, Julie Hagerty, Lisa Joyce and Larry Pine. The New Group has announced today complete casting for David Rabe's Sticks and Bones, the production that launches the company's 20th Anniversary Season. This production will feature Richard Chamberlain, Nadia Gan, Morocco Omari, Ben Schnetzer, Raviv Ullman, and as previously announced, Holly Hunter and Bill Pullman. Scott Elliott directs. In this taut 2013 theatrical adaptation of Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela's award winning-book, the apartheid regime's most notorious assassin and head of its death squad, Eugene de Kock (played by Matthew Marsh), sits opposite psychologist Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela (played Noma Dumezweni) in Pretoria Central Prison in 1997. Gobodo-Madikizela is a member of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission determined to understand his actions. She questions de Kock, who is sentenced to two life terms plus 212 years for crimes against humanity, murder, conspiracy to murder, attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, illegal possession of firearms, and fraud.
