Based on the plays Miles Gloriosus, Pseudolus, and Mostellaria by Plautus (251-183 B.C.)

This hysterical musical features a beloved score by Stephen Sondheim and an uproarious book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart. The musical's original Broadway production won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book. Forum has also enjoyed several Broadway and West End revivals.



A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum tells the bawdy story of Pseudolus, a slave in ancient Rome, who goes to great lengths to gain his freedom by securing a courtesan for his young master, Hero. Scheming slaves, mistaken identities and courtesans each with their own gimmick deliver on the promise of the famous opening number, that there will be comedy tonight.

For the past 17 years Pittsburgh Public Theater has been led by impresario and consummate showman Ted Pappas. His aesthetic has defined the company, his business acumen has kept the organization remarkably debt-free, his exacting standards have established The Public as one of the finest regional theaters in America, and his tireless presence at numerous performances have made him the face of Pittsburgh Public Theater. Mr. Pappas this week announced that in 18 months he will leave the company, at the conclusion of the 2017/2018 season. During his final season he will direct productions of Peter Shaffer's Equus, Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and William Shakespeare's Hamlet. (more...)

NTC Stages the Stephen Sondheim/George Furth Musical COMPANY

Novato Theater Company continues its successful 2016- 2017 season with the musical comedy, Company, with book by George Furth and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.  The show was originally directed on Broadway by Harold Prince.  The NTC production is directed by Patrick Nims, with musical direction by Andrew Klein and choreography by Kate Kenyon.  It is produced by Vicki Martinez.  Company runs March 24-April 16at the NTC Playhouse, 5420 Nave Drive in Novato. Multi-award winning Foothill Music Theatre will give Bay Area audiences their first look at the 2014 revised version of the acclaimed Broadway musical Side Show. This dazzling work, featuring music by Henry Krieger (Dreamgirls), and book/lyrics by Bill Russell (Pageant, Lucky Duck), was nominated for four 1998 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress. The 2014 revival, which incorporates a revised script and several new songs, received additional critical acclaim, was nominated for five Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Revival, and was awarded the 2015 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Musical. Side Show is based on the true story of Daisy and Violet Hilton, conjoined twins who rose from a sideshow attraction to become sensational vaudeville stars in the 1930s. The Engeman's latest, Jekyll & Hyde, The Musical is absolutely electrifying and the Broadway caliber cast is positively glorious. This is, without a doubt, a must see for the season. Like many undergraduates at Yale University in the mid-1960s, Bill Hannay was fond of avant garde literature, especially if it tested people's commitment to the constitutional principle of freedom of expression. He followed, for example, the obscenity trials over the publication of the novel Naked Lunch underway in Los Angeles and Boston. The latter turned out to one of the last landmark decisions on obscenity in the 20th Century. Hannay's passion for the law led him to a career as an attorney, and he has been a partner at Chicago's Schiff Hardin LLP for 30 years, but another life-long passion - for the theater - never waned, either.
