Freely adapted from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
Nothing is as thrilling on the stage as a well-crafted tale, and Oliver! is just such a show. Based on the Dickens novel, it engages with its pathos and drama, while delighting everyone with the musical numbers "Food, Glorious Food," "I'd Do Anything," "Where is Love?," "Consider Yourself," "As Long As He Needs Me," and "Who Will Buy." Dickens' characters are brought to life-perhaps larger than life-with all their facets glowing in this production.
Speaking at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts annual benefit gala last night at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, Academy Award-winning director, producer and screenwriter Oliver Stone recalled his days at the iconic arts school, which he attended in the years after his return from Vietnam. "I entered back into civilization at Tisch," he said. "New York was the right place at the right time. It's been my orphan home." Mr. Stone was honored last night by NYU's Tisch School of the Arts for Outstanding Achievement in the Cinematic Arts. Tony and Grammy-award winning actor Steve Kazee (Once) and Grey's Anatomy's Chandra Wilson co-hosted the benefit gala, where over $1 million was raised for the school. The evening's entertainment included a stirring rendition of the Oscar-winning "Falling Slowly" by Kazee, as well as a series of musical performances by current Tisch students. What does it take to work together successfully? Collaborative authors Jay Flynn, Kaenan Oliver and Dominic Oliver know the answer so well they could probably write a book about it. The Los Angeles writing team recently paused their busy screenwriting careers to produce 'Jitterbug Lift,' their first novel by 'Oliver Flynn.'
'We check our egos at the door,' Dominic Oliver said. Kaenan Oliver agreed, 'Whatever's best for the story makes for the best collaboration.' Having worked together for years, Jay Flynn added, 'It's about the relationship. We have spent weeks non-stop polishing a draft and other times had to sneak our writing in like alcoholics.'
Jitterbug Lift takes off with the opening shot of the Cold War in 1948, when the Soviet Union deprived Berliners of supplies, and blockaded access to the city. The Allies flew thousands of air-drops into Berlin for a year. 'The Airlift was the right thing to do,' said Dominic about the controversial aid. 'And Truman did it-in the middle of an election.'
Like post-World War II comic book heroes, each writer brought a special skill to the mission: Jay is a college professor and electrical engineer; Kaenan is a script consultant; and Dominic is an actor and acting coach. Together they crafted an historical thriller fueled by desire, revenge, romance and forgiveness. Here's the scoop:
Former WWII bomber pilot Chance Mitchell trades bombs for food, fuel and medicine to drop over Berliners while his private mission is to find and rescue his buddy and former B-17 copilot whose plane recently went down behind the Iron Curtain on a clandestine flight. His quest through the lawless ruins takes him to the beautiful but damaged Sonya, a Jewish Resistance fighter with an enigmatic mission. Powerfully attracted, Chance doesn't know if she will lead to his answer or his destruction. When a fire has blazed so hot, one can be burned by even the ashes for a long time.
What's it all about? On that, the three agree: the human toll of war, the struggle to survive, the power of connection. And above all, Love and Reunification.
Major players in this story emerge as the German women who united to rebuild their country. 'They weren't very glamorous,' said Jay. 'It was an agonizing, slow process that doesn't fit into one date in history. But they were still a major force.'
The authors have always been attracted to the idea that great things are done by ordinary people. 'When you're at 35,000 feet flying over the Rockies, you're being held up by things that weigh so little that it takes a trillion trillion of them to make a gram,' Jay said. 'And each one is hitting the plane's wings and pushing it up, just a little. But given enough of them, they will carry you home. We're a lot bigger than those molecules of air. Together we can do great things.'
What's next for Oliver Flynn? An action-adventure novel set in Panama. More details? Shhhh....It's Top Secret.

Picture it: a young man from Pennsylvania trains in ballet, moves to New York, and then finds success as a musical theatre dancer. It sounds like the stuff of fairy tales, doesn't it? Well, for 22-year-old Michael McIlwee, it was reality. This young dancer from Scranton is currently serving as the dance captain for the Harbor Lights Theatre Company production of Oliver, which runs July 12-28 at Snug Harbor Music Hall in Staten Island, New York. Mr. McIlwee was kind enough to talk with me this week about his passion for dance, his dream roles, and how Harbor Lights' production of Oliver is using dance to tell the story of the Charles Dickens orphan.

At last year's Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) Awards, two of the big winners were T. Oliver Reid (photo left) for Male Debut and Eric Michael Gillett for Major Artist, Male (and both could very likely be MAC nominees again this year). Almost a year later, two of New York cabaret's leading men performed new shows one night apart at 54 Below; Reid on February 6 with Drop Me Off in Harlem, and Gillett the next night with Careless Rhapsody: An Evening Dedicated to the Lyrics of Lorenz Hart. Ironically, what the shows had in common--besides being a fairly good fit of material to singer--was that the majority of their sets featured songs written in the 1930s but in very different styles. With Reid it was the jazz, swing and blues of Harlem; with Gillette it was the romantic Broadway musical sensibility of Hart's lyrics (paired with the timeless melodies of Richard Rodgers). While neither Reid's 'Harlem,' nor Gillett's 'Hart' were stirring or spectacular shows, they were both solid and entertaining enough that both could be nominated for BroadwayWorld.com Awards in 2013.

Human Race Theatre's 2012-2013 Eichelberger Loft Season continues with Alan Souza's uniquely revisionist version of Oliver!, Lionel Bart's play of an orphan who dared to ask for more. Exchanging the full orchestra of musicians and the workhouse full of children for a gifted cast of ten performers who play multiple roles, Souza reduces the story to its relevant core in a play within a play. Originally slated to perform until December 16, the run has been extended to add seven performances. Oliver! runs now through December 22, 2012. Get a first look at the show in the photos below!
