Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams Discusses Memoir, 11/20
by Christina Mancuso - Oct 11, 2013

Jody Williams will discuss her memoir, 'My Name is Jody Williams: A Vermont Girl's Winding Path to the Nobel Peace Prize,' at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Brazos Bookstore. The event is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the event. From her modest beginnings to becoming the tenth woman - and third American woman - to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Jody Williams takes the reader through the ups and downs of her tumultuous and remarkable life. In a voice that is at once candid, straightforward, and intimate, Williams describes her Catholic roots, her first step on a long road to standing up to bullies in defense of her deaf brother Stephen, her transformation from good girl to college hippie at the University of Vermont, and her protest of the war in Vietnam. She relates how, in 1981, she began her lifelong dedication to global activism as she battled to stop the U.S.-backed war in El Salvador. 'Jody Williams is a powerful woman. When she speaks, she carries the room. When she writes, she is equally clear and captivating,' writes Pat Mitchell, CEO of the Paley Center and former CEO of PBS. 'What might be the best thing about her - whether she's speaking or writing - is that she shares her power. She is tireless in her work for a better world for us all. She engages through humor and humility and makes anyone who comes in contact with her believe that they too can change the world.' Williams received the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for her work to ban landmines. She is the Sam and Cele Keeper Endowed Professor in Peace and Social Justice at UH GCSW where she has been teaching since 2003. She is the founding chair of the Nobel Women's Initiative, launched in January 2006. The recipient of fifteen honorary degrees, Williams was named among the 100 most powerful women in the world in 2004 by Forbes magazine. Since 1998, she has served as a campaign ambassador for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which she helped found in 1992. by BWW News Desk - Sep 19, 2013

La Reunion is an island where the dead speak to the living. Where the barrier between this world and the next is very thin. And that's the space Christine Salem's music inhabits, 'where I can talk to the ancestors,' she explains. To listen to her new album, Salem Tradition, is to understand: it is music from another place, hypnotic and transcendent, yet still grounded. It doesn't just move the audience - in concert the spirit of a piece can take her over in the middle of a song.

BWW Reviews: The Texas Repertory Theatre Company's THE NERD is Dated but Entertains
by David Clarke - Aug 31, 2013

The Texas Repertory Theatre Company is opening its ninth season with Larry Shue's THE NERD, a comedic play in two acts. The simplistic comedy had its world premiere at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater in April 1981, and it starred Larry Shue in the role of Willum Cubbert. Glowing press and strong word of mouth eventually enabled the play to open on Broadway, where it played 441 performances from March 22, 1987 to April 10, 1988. Plot wise, there really is not much here. The play centers on the fact that Willum Cubbert was saved by a man named Rick Stedman when they were both in Vietnam. However, Willum was unconscious when his life was saved, so he and Rick have never met. Through ongoing correspondence the ever-grateful Willum has promised to welcome Rick with open arms should he ever come to Terre Haute, Indiana. Out of the blue, Rick turns up at Willum's home and proves himself to be the houseguest from hell.

After countless sold out shows in major cities, a mixtape and singles with lyrics that throngs of fans know by heart, everyone's favorite R&B bad girl K Michelle, is set to release 'Very Special' (VSOP), the first single from her fan demanded debut album, 'Rebellious Soul', scheduled to hit the streets on July 30th, which is currently available on iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/v.s.o.p.-single/id647540351). With a sample of Debra Laws beloved 1981 hit record with the same title, and sung in the key of heavenly, K Michelle tells the sultry tale of a night of romance over a remixed beat of live strings and instruments. Having began her career as a classically trained pianist and completing college on a yodeling scholarship, there is no surprise K Michelle, who has been singing since a child, would painstakingly incorporate an orchestra into her freshman debut. Just another unexpected nuance about the reality television star that keeps fans intrigued.
