God of Vengeance - 2016 - Off-Broadway History , Info & More

La Mama E.T.C.
85 East 4th St.(between Bowery & 2nd Aves) New York, NY

"Got fun nekome," tells the wrenching story of a brothel owner's attempt to marry off his daughter to lead a dignified religious life, only to have her drawn back into the life of sin in which she grew up. The show is credited with presenting the first lesbian kiss on Broadway in 1923 at the Apollo Theatre on West 42nd Street.

Considered one of the most psychologically revealing plays of the first half of the 20th century, and still highly explosive for its conflicted view of Judaism, "God of Vengeance" is frequently translated and adapted and is the basis of Paula Vogel's "Indecent," which enjoyed a critically acclaimed extended run last spring. (Plans to bring "Indecent" to Broadway this season have been announced.)

This extraordinary opportunity to experience this play authentically in its original language is presented by the internationally acclaimed New Yiddish Rep, which is known for presenting modern theater for diverse contemporary audiences (especially non-Yiddish-speakers) in Yiddish. Its acclaimed productions of "Waiting for Godot" (2013 & 2014), and "Death of a Salesman" (2015) -- nominated last season for two Drama Desk Awards (Best Revival of a Play and Best Actor in a Play for Avi Hoffman as Willy Loman) -- were credited with shedding new light on two modern theatre classics. David Mandelbaum is NYR's artistic director.

2019's Most Anticipated Rochester Productions
by Colin Fleming-Stumpf - Jan 6, 2019

Happy New Year Rochester theatre-goers! It is now officially 2019, and with it a new year full of wonderful theatrical productions of all varieties on stages large-and-small across the 585. We're fortunate to live in a city with some of the most diverse and eclectic arts organizations in New York State, so I thought I'd take a minute to highlight some of the productions I'm most excited about in 2019. A couple caveats: #1, the typical theatre season runs September(ish)-June(ish), and most theatre companies haven't announced their 2019-2020 seasons yet, so this article really only encompasses the first half of 2019; and #2, my theatrical tastes and interests aren't necessarily representative of the wider theatre-going community, so this list may not reflect Rochester's most anticipated or talked-about shows on the horizon (notice RBTL's upcoming run of Hamilton didn't make the cut, not for lack of worthiness). That being said, enjoy, and as always your thoughts and feedback are welcome!

Head Trick Presents MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
by Stephi Wild - Jul 14, 2018

"Sigh no more, ladies"…Sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick are tricked into falling for each other in Shakespeare's classic battle of wits, set against the backdrop of a darker story of romantic betrayal and prejudice. The return of the soldiers from war heralds two things: the resumption of a less life-and-death "merry war" between the witty Benedick and her equally witty ex Beatrice, and a fairytale engagement between Claudio and Hero. What better way to pass the time before the wedding than by setting their old friends up? Sometimes even very clever people will believe anything they hear…

Studio Theatre's VIETGONE is a Refugee Romance and Madcap Road Trip With Comic Book Sensibilities
by Stephi Wild - Apr 9, 2018

Vietgone by Qui Nguyen is the Vietnamese-American playwright's own creation story-a telling of his parents' 1975 refugee camp romance in a "geek theater" spectacle that's at turns affecting, sage, raucous, and fantastical. A screenwriter for Marvel Studios and founder of Obie Award-winning company Vampire Cowboys, Nguyen's work champions representation and diversity on stage while dripping with pop culture nods, contemporary music, and action-adventure narrative. The production pairs this Studio-commissioned playwright with director and Studio Cabinet member Natsu Onoda Power. Drawing on Vietgone's comic book aesthetics, Studio's Stage 4 is transformed into a garage concert with a live band and original funk-rock-punk-n-roll score, giving audiences a front row seat to this anything-but-typical story of boy meets girl.

Unicorn Theatre Presents VIETGONE
by Stephi Wild - Apr 7, 2018

Award-winning pioneer playwright Qui Nguyen brilliantly chronicles the love story of his parents' meeting in an Arkansas refugee center after fleeing Vietnam after the fall of Saigon in 1975. It's a buddy story, an all-American romance, and a motorcycle road-trip adventure that reexamines how we think about the heroes and victims of the Vietnam War. Vietgone skips through time and roams the globe with snarky humor, hip-hop, and lots of sex. It's one ironic, foul-mouthed, bad-ass new play.
