Writers' Theatre Opens Season With ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN And From Page To Stage Series 9/29 Thru 12/6

Writers' Theatre, under the leadership of Artistic Director Michael Halberstam and Executive Director Kathryn M. Lipuma, opens its 2009-10 season with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard, directed by Michael Halberstam. The production runs September 29- December 6, 2009, at Writers' Theatre, 325 Tudor Court in Glencoe.

Derek Walcott's New Play MARIE LAVEAU To have Reading Presented By NFT, 6/28

Woodie King Jr's New Federal Theatre will present the final reading in the Gurfein Foundation/Ntozake Shange Play Reading Series: Derek Walcott's new play Marie Laveau, with music by Galt MacDermot. The reading will take place Sunday, June 28th at 3pm, at Castillo Theatre, 543 West 42nd Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues). Clinton Turner Davis directs a cast that features Arthur Bartow, Trazana Beverley, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, Gerard Catus, Lia Chaing, DK Dyson, Stu Richel, Martin Shakar, and Marie Thomas as Marie Laveau.

Terra Foundation For American Art Presents Free Two-Day, Two-City Symposium 6/19-20

To many, modern art means post-1940s abstraction. Yet American modernism got its start decades earlier and took several forms. The Terra Foundation for American Art, Milwaukee Art Museum and the American Decorative Art 1900 Foundation are convening a free two-day, two-city symposium, ?What?s Modern about American Art, 1900 ?1930?? on June 19 (Chicago) and June 20 (Milwaukee). The symposium explores modernism as expressed in American painting and design from 1900 to 1930. Free registration is required, and includes free round-trip transportation between Chicago and Milwaukee for the June 20 programming. NY Philharmonic Announces Details Of June 2009 Radio Broadcasts

In June 2009, The New York Philharmonic This Week ? a two-hour, national, weekly radio program of concerts by the New York Philharmonic ? begins with a concert from the Philharmonic?s sixth annual residency in Vail, Colorado, as part of the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. In this program, from the July 18, 2008 performance, Music Director Designate Alan Gilbert leads the Orchestra in Tchaikovsky?s Piano Concerto No. 1, with Lang Lang as soloist; Beethoven?s Symphony No. 4; and Sibelius?s Finlandia. The following week, after conducting J.S. Bach?s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, Music Director Lorin Maazel leads the World Premiere of Aaron Jay Kernis?s a Voice, a Messenger (a Co-Commission with the New York Philharmonic and the Big Ten Band Association); Copland?s Clarinet Concerto, with Principal Clarinet Stanley Drucker as soloist; and Ravel?s Boléro. The third June broadcast, conducted by Lorin Maazel, will be Britten?s powerful War Requiem. Lionel Bringuier conducts the chamber orchestra (in his Philharmonic debut), and soprano Nancy Gustafson, tenor Vale Rideout (Philharmonic debut), and baritone Ian Greenlaw will be the soloists with the New York Choral Artists, the Dessoff Symphonic Choir, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. In the final June broadcast, Lorin Maazel conducts two of his own compositions, Monaco Fanfares and Farewells, concluding with Sibelius?s Symphony No. 2.

The play is based on legendary New York City mayor Fiorello La Guardia who, with passion and grit, changed the face of New York City.
