BWW Reviews: Baron's Men Presents a Mediocre MERCHANT OF VENICE
by Jeff Davis - Apr 15, 2013

While Shakespeare's comedy The Merchant of Venice is not considered by all as one of his 'problem plays,' there are certainly many aspects about it that are problematic, namely its length and the latent anti-Semitism apparent in the text. These problems and more must be addressed for a production of the play to succeed. Sadly, as skilled as The Baron's Men are at bringing the Bard to life, they struggle with their current production of The Merchant of Venice, now playing Austin's Curtain Theater.

POCKET MERCHANT Announced As 2013 Propeller Production
by Carrie Dunn - Apr 11, 2013

Pocket Merchant, a 60-minute version of The Merchant of Venice, will be based on Propeller's acclaimed 2008/09 production. Set in a prison called Venice, the environment brings out the more radical tendencies in human nature, and which is fertile ground for the ferocious intolerance that Shakespeare examines in this controversial play.

BWW Reviews: CTC's THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is Masterful, Gripping, Sharply Perceptive
by David Clarke - Mar 31, 2013

Houston's Classical Theatre Company (CTC) has had one amazing season at their new home at Studio 101 in the Spring Street Studios. I was impressed by their productions of MISS JULIE and UBU ROI, but their production of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE deftly exposes the sincere theatrical talent that legends are made out of. As affair warning, because this brilliantly raw production is pared down to three actors and utilizes an abridged adaptation by CTC's dramaturg Shea Thomas Cooper, it won't hurt to re-familiarize yourself with the plot to ensure that you don't get lost in this stirring translation of the text.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 2/1- THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
by Nicole Rosky - Feb 1, 2013

Today in 1915, The Merchant of Venice opened at the 44th Street Theatre. A tragic comedy by William Shakespeare, the play believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598. The title character is the merchant Antonio, not the Jewish moneylender Shylock, who is the play's most prominent and most famous character. This is made explicit by the title page of the first quarto: The mo?t excellent Hi?torie of the Merchant of Venice. The play was recenlty brought to Broadway in 2010 after a successful run at Shakespeare in the Park with Al Pacino and Lily Rabe.

Sherry Cohen's Picks for The Best of 2012
by Sherry Shameer Cohen - Dec 28, 2012

It's always hard for me to come up with the best of anything in entertainment. With my backstage theatre background, I'm obsessed with detail, and I can't simply sit back and enjoy any show. As a writer, I'm obsessed with the words, the sentence, the grammar, etc., and I can never read strictly for pleasure. In the pressure cooker of coming up with the best picks for 2012, I have a mixed pot.
