English Touring Theatre today announces its spring season which features the world premiere of Silver Lining, a new comedy written by Sandi Toksvig, and a tour of the critically acclaimed Olivier Award winning Shakespeare's Globe production of Nell Gwynn, starring Laura Pitt-Pulford in the title role.  It is the final season under the stewardship of Director Rachel Tackley who is leaving the company to become Executive Director of Chichester Festival Theatre.  Richard Tywman takes over, having been Associate Director (International) of the Royal Court Theatre since 2013. "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery and Ignorance is Strength."  Greenway Arts Alliance Presents: George Orwell's 1984, directed by Kate Jopson as the first production of their novel to stage program Greenway Reads. 300 Fairfax High School students are reading the novel and will attend matinee's of the theatrical production. The adaptation by Alan Lyddiard creates an interactive and engaging experience for audience members. Jopson said, "We're trying to create an immersive experience. The elements of the play and its themes are all around us in the real world. We try to emphasize that and as soon as you arrive at the theater there's not anywhere you're not in the set of 1984, even in the lobby and bathrooms."   (more...)

With John Malkovich's acclaimed production of Good Canary entering its final week, Rose Theatre Kingston today announces its new season for 2017.  Headlining the season is the world premiere of My Brilliant Friend, a two-part adaptation of Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan quartet of novels which have become a global literary sensation.  The true identity of the author is a mystery, with Elena Ferrante a pseudonym used by the writer, but speculation over the weekend suggested that the author had been unmasked.   (more...)

Written in approximately 1610, The Winter's Tale is considered to be one of a group of Shakespeare's plays that are vaguely defined by their tragic undertones and simultaneous use of straightforward comic situations. Other plays in this category include Measure for Measure, The Merchant of Venice, Troilus & Cressida, All's Well that Ends Well, and Timon of Athens. While this is the first time the Festival will be featuring this play as its mainstage show in Forest Park, The Winter's Tale was adapted for the 2013 Shakespeare in the Streets production Old Hearts Fresh, written by Festival playwright Nancy Bell and performed in The Grove. Faction of Fools Theatre Company presents William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, pairing heightened text with heightened physical comedy in the style of Commedia dell'Arte. One of Shakespeare's most rich and intricate plays is also one of his most controversial, as it explores a burgeoning merchant class and what happens when things get personal. By utilizing masks and physical characterizations from Commedia dell'Arte, Faction of Fools puts the comedy back into the text, allowing the tragic junctures to cut all the more profoundly. 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death, and Boston Public Library honors the Bard's lasting legacy with its Shakespeare Unauthorized exhibition, opening on Friday, October 14 in the McKim Exhibition Hall on the first floor of the McKim building at the Central Library in Copley Square. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the BPL citywide initiative All the City's a Stage: A Season of Shakespeare at the Boston Public Library, connecting audiences to theater and the dramatic arts with programs throughout the library system.
