Not Blood Paint to Release New Album BELIEVING IS BELIEVING This June
by BWW News Desk - May 4, 2016

To call Brooklyn art-rock outfit Not Blood Paint unique would be an understatement. Conventionally, the band is theatrically vivid and sonically intense. Musically, it's a group impossible to pigeonhole, far removed from traditional verse-chorus-verse structures. Not Blood Paint's new album, Believing Is Believing is out June 17.  (more...)

BWW Dance Review: ABT's 'Shostakovich Trilogy' by Ratmansky
by Barnett Serchuk - May 31, 2016

A funny thing happened on the evening of May 22, 2016, at the Metropolitan Opera House, where ABT was presenting Alexei Ratmansky's 'Shostakovich Trilogy.' There were lots of empty seats. Since Ratmansky's reputation has pretty much enveloped the entire ballet world, I was very surprised to see this. On the other hand, an evening of three Shostakovich works can be enervating, putting high demands on the eyes and ears of an audience. Many might prefer to just stay away. (more...)

BWW Review: BUGLISI DANCE THEATRE Celebrates Women of Distinction
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jun 9, 2016

Like sand through the hourglass, so is the choreography of Jacqulyn Buglisi. No one can argue that Ms. Buglisi knows how to craft beautifully lush movement. Her dances are ephemeral yet timeless, like a conjured dream held in stasis. But in the wrong hands, this ravishing quality becomes smothering. Luckily Ms. Buglisi formed her original company with Terese Capucilli, Christine Dakin, and Donlin Foreman. At the time they were filling a void left in the wake of Martha Graham's death. More than this, they were four of the most talented dancers on the planet coming into their own as creators while using their own incomparable bodies as tools of deliverance; how could the results be anything less than spectacular? Though one wonders, was it the work or the performers? We found out on June 7th, 2016 at The Ailey Citigroup Theatre during the gala performance of Buglisi Dance Theatre's 23rd Season. (more...)

BWW Review: Theater Schmeater's THE CROSSING : Great Singing, Wrong Focus
by Amelia Reynolds - Jul 18, 2016

Rose-of-the-air Amelia Earhart is a very elusive historical figure. I'm even named after her, and I don't know that much about her. So when I heard that Theater Schmeater was not only putting on their very first musical, but it was a musical about Amelia Earhart, I was very excited to learn more about the person behind the legend. As it turns out, 'The Crossing' is not a musical about Amelia Earhart, like it advertises, but rather a musical about Ray Spencer, the weatherman that may have killed Amelia Earhart. In a musical where nobody can stop talking about the woman crazy enough to fly across the Atlantic Ocean (and by herself, to boot!), that very woman is bafflingly under-represented. The Schmee's first musical had outstanding vocal performances by the cast, but it is inaccurate to even pretend that this musical is about Amelia Earhart. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Apr 11, 2016

In 'Midnight Kill,' written and directed by K.K. Wong, a school campus in a Chinese rural village during the 1970's becomes a theater of twisted, oppressed but indelible human desires. Daily mundane activities become an absurd performance of ordinary people's basic emotions. The play is based around an actual murder story that occurred in a mountain hamlet in Anhui province (China), where the author lived for five years. Yangtze Repertory Theatre of America will present the work's world premiere May 6 to 22 at Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave., NYC. It will be performed in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles and will be completely accessible for English-speaking audiences. (more...)
