The Pacific Symphony Presents CARMINA BURANA, 6/5-7The Pacific Symphony Presents CARMINA BURANA, 6/5-7
by BWW News Desk - May 20, 2014

Haunting melodies and sweet, euphonious voices combine to create a deeply moving, life-affirming evening of music, as Pacific Symphony dives into spiritual depths in preparation for Carl Orff's masterful oratorio, “Carmina Burana.” Weaving together lyrics that date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, “Carmina Burana” is brazen with its gleeful double entendre and is made even more decadent with the magnificent voices of soprano Cyndia Sieden, tenor Marc Molomot and baritone Michael Kelly joining the orchestra. Led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, the Symphony paves the way for Orff's masterful work by performing John Williams' “Exsultate Justi,” Lukas Foss' “Elegy for Anne Frank,” Charles Ives' “The Unanswered Question” and Kathy C. Bowen's “I Believe in God.” Pacific Chorale, led by Artistic Director John Alexander, lends its voices to enhance the majestic sounds, while Southern California Children's Chorus represents the voices of children during World War II. BWW Reviews: Circuit Invites the Audience into THE LYONS DenBWW Reviews: Circuit Invites the Audience into THE LYONS Den
by Joseph Baker - Jun 2, 2014

There's a moment in the first act of Nicky Silver's THE LYONS when dying patriarch 'Ben' is asked whether he is in pain; his response, a monosyllabic 'Yes,' hardly ranks with any of the brilliantly barbed lines scattered throughout the play, but as intoned by veteran actor Ron Gephart, it acquires a startling variety of shades. As uttered by this gifted performer, a number of insights can be gained into the unfortunate Ben's character: Frustration, resignation, intolerance. If Mr. Gephart can manage that by simply saying 'Yes,' imagine what he is able to do with the dialogues and monologs that follow. (more...)

by David Clarke - Jan 28, 2014

Theatre Suburbia, Northwest Houston's longest-running all volunteer playhouse, is ringing in the new year with a production of local playwright Carl Williams' UNDER A COWBOY MOON. The light-hearted comedy takes place in the small west Texas town of Spitwhistle, where there really are only cowboys, longnecks, and the Saddle Horn Bar. To encourage tourism, the residents of Spitwhistle organize a cowboy poetry contest with a $500 grand prize. However, a TV crew from the Boston PBS affiliate arrives to film to contest and the prize is raised to $5,000. With a touch of romance and a lot of ego, the competitors set out to prove who has the best pen in the west. (more...)

New Novel Reveals Organized Crime and WitchcraftNew Novel Reveals Organized Crime and Witchcraft
by BWW News Desk - Feb 7, 2014

The contrast between the natural tranquility of the forest and the hectic grind of the city is stark, and the shift between the two environs was a major source of childhood trauma for author William Lightning. This chaotic dichotomy dominated his formative years as a highly imaginative young boy, and years later, it would serve as a thematic inspiration for his novel, a tale of urban fantasy titled, 'The Runaway Witch and the Laughing Bear'. New Book Reveals 'A Faith Journey…By God for God's People'New Book Reveals 'A Faith Journey…By God for God's People'
by BWW News Desk - Feb 4, 2014

'Grieving in pain with no hope to spare I was hurt. Like Naomi in the book of Ruth, I felt as if God had forgotten me. War waged in my soul, too weak to fight, I begged death to visit me. Warring constantly, attrition began to take its toll, corruption and plague so rampant I had lost the taste for life. My wounds were deep, and my scars of abuses were heavy. They were weighing me down,' an excerpt from author Simone Rose's new book says. Being at the cross road of death and life, Rose says she was rescued ashore by God, who restored her faith, strengthening her and being with her through an intimate walk that ultimately empowered her to overcome life's adversaries and become a testimony and blessing to others. by BWW News Desk - Feb 26, 2014

Mass strandings of whales have puzzled people since Aristotle. Modern-day strandings can be investigated and their causes, often human-related, identified. Events that happened millions of years ago, however, are far harder to analyze—frequently leaving their cause a mystery. A team of Smithsonian and Chilean scientists examined a large fossil site of ancient marine mammal skeletons in the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile—the first definitive example of repeated mass strandings of marine mammals in the fossil record. The site reflected four distinct strandings over time, indicating a repeated and similar cause: toxic algae. The team's findings will be published Feb. 26 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. by Jay Irwin - Feb 11, 2014

When my Mom goes to see shows of mine that are on the edgy or weirder side she inevitably comes back with the comment, "That was interesting" afterward. Translation: not my thing and a little too weird. I, on the other hand, like a little weird in my theater especially when it culminates into a good message or "aha!" moment at the end. But while I was on board through Act One with the message and imagery in "Marisol", the inaugural production from newly hatched theater company The Collision Project, Act Two led me into a melange of overdone messages and just became kind of "interesting" for me. by BWW News Desk - Apr 1, 2014

Traditionally, document capture and workflow solutions were adopted to cover the most common paper-to-electronic document challenges such as scanning back to the user, typically through email, and scanning to a “save location” such as a document management system, network folder or even a user's desktop. As this type of capture became commonplace, more targeted and specific document processes were automated with scan, capture, route and fax technologies. These document processes are often referred to as “workflows.” In this survey, it was found that general records management continues to be the workflow where most companies are using document-process automation solutions.
