The Wall, was adapted by Millard Lampell and is based on John Hersey's novel of the same name.



The Wall tells the inspiring story of forty men and women who escape the dehumanizing horror of the Warsaw ghetto. John Hersey's novel documents the Warsaw ghetto both as an emblem of Nazi persecution and as a personal confrontation with torture, starvation, humiliation, and cruelty.

Leon Botstein will lead the American Symphony Orchestra in Luigi Nono's opera Intolleranza 1960, the final performance this season in the ASO's four-concert Vanguard series, on Thursday, March 1, 8 PM at Carnegie Hall. The program is part of the series' season-long theme examining the music composers have created under varied political leaderships.

The program continues the season's political focus by examining the music composers have created under various types of leadership, in this case Stalin's dictatorship and anti-Semitic rule.

Award-winning music producer, critic and translator Lawrence Schulman, who lives on Mount Desert Island, Maine, will give a talk on Judy Garland, entitled Moments of Magic, at Piper Shores in Scarborough, Maine on Monday, April 30, 2018 at 3 P.M. Admission is free. The one-and-a-quarter hour talk will examine Judy Garland's life and career, and feature nine audio-video clips, to be followed by a question and answer. Schulman will endeavor to answer the question: If I had about one hour to convince you of Judy Garland's place in classic American popular music, what film and television performances would I choose?

Loosely based on the play The Romancers (Les Romanesques) by Edmond Rostand, the musical follows two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud. Set in a world of moonlight and magic, this classic musical teaches us about life, love, and the lessons learned along the way. Written in 1960 by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones, the show's original Off-Broadway production ran a total of 42 years and 17,162 performances, making it the world's longest-running musical.
