Norma Terris Theatre
North Main Street Chester, CT

Based on the stories of Rudyard Kipling

How did the Elephant get his trunk?br

How did the Leopard get his spots?br

How did the Rhinoceros get his skin?brbr

In the "Just So Stories," Rudyard Kipling created a magical world as he told his daughter fables of the animal kingdom. In "Just So," George Stiles and Anthony Drewe ("Honk!") have created a new musical that weaves five of Mr. Kipling's most famous tales together into a fanciful lesson about personal courage, individuality and friendship.

Review: FAR EAST at On the Verge Theatre
by Brett Cullum - Sep 4, 2023

The thing about FAR EAST is the emotional stakes are never high. Unlike MADAME BUTTERFLY where we are faced with a scorned woman and an illegitimate child, here we never see the soldier’s Japanese lover. And contrasted with FROM HERE TO ETERNITY where an affair is consummated on a wildly active beach, the soldier and his captain’s wife merely brush against each other almost politely rather than passionately.

Interview: Greg Pierotti: THE LARAMIE PROJECT Co-Creator Directs Timely Revival, Talks Commemoration of Matthew Shepard's Passing
by Robert Encila-Celdran - Sep 4, 2023

In this interview, we have the privilege of evoking Greg Pierotti's insights. He is a University of Arizona Theatre professor, a distinguished artist, and the co-author of THE LARAMIE PROJECT, which he now directs at the university. The script evolved from his work with Moisés Kaufman and the renowned Tectonic Theater Project in New York City. The company is best known for developing new plays using 'Moment Work,' a trademarked playwriting method that employs rigorous research and collaboration in a laboratory environment. The process is a significant part of Pierotti's work, which resides at the intersection of theater and anthropology.

Review: RAGTIME at Union Avenue Opera
by Steve Callahan - Aug 22, 2023

When the musical Ragtime was produced for Broadway in 1998 it was a colossal, big-budget show.  It cost some ten million dollars.  What in the world were the folks at tiny little Union Avenue Opera thinking when they decided to include this show in their twenty-ninth season?  Ragtime, the musical treatment of E. L. Doctorow’s vast rambling nostalgic, wonderfully American novel, is far removed from opera.

Based on the celebrated 1998 novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish tells the larger-than-life tale of Edward Bloom, a man who leads an extraordinary life– according to the stories he tells his son, Will. But Will, who is getting married and expecting a child of his own, doesn't think there is any truth to the extravagant tales his father tells about meeting giants, mermaids, and joining the circus. When Edward's health begins to decline, Will visits his father and tries one last time to find out the truth behind the tall tales.

Review: BEETLEJUICE at Broadway San Jose
by Linda Hodges - Aug 2, 2023

What did our critic think of BEETLEJUICE at Broadway San Jose? Who knew that Beetlejuice would be just the right tonic for the nightly news and this summer’s Indictment Watch ’23 (there’s still Georgia to watch for).  Turns out that frighteningly funny laughs about death beats reality every time. This screen-to-stage adaptation from the iconic, beloved 1998 Tim Burton film of the same name was made for the stage. But it has a less than one-week-only, “Bay-stay” (it RIP after August 6) so get your tickets now. Forget your troubles, c’mon it’s scary at Broadway San Jose’s Beetlejuice!
