It will also convey the continuum of hundreds of years of artistic tradition, maintained against a backdrop of monumental cultural change. National Portrait Gallery Announces Schedule of March Events, Including Elaine de Kooning ExhibitionNational Portrait Gallery Announces Schedule of March Events, Including Elaine de Kooning Exhibition
by BWW News Desk - Feb 26, 2015

Elaine de Kooning made both abstract and figurative paintings and drawings during the height of Abstract Expressionism in New York City. Fairfield Porter once commented that de Kooning's Images of men, for which she is best known, were “both sympathetic and frighteningly acute.” De Kooning's gestural portraits of friends and family were much admired during her lifetime and included such well-known Americans as President John F. Kennedy, poets Frank O'Hara and Allen Ginsberg, critic Harold Rosenberg, choreographer Merce Cunningham and painters Willem de Kooning and Fairfield Porter. In her portraits, Elaine de Kooning sought the “instantaneous illumination” of recognition and worked to capture that moment. She characterized her portraits of John F. Kennedy as “a glimpse” of the president through an accumulation of sketches and finished likenesses. (more...)

Blue Mountain Gallery to Host Panel Discussion on Artists Confronting Climate Change, 3/14Blue Mountain Gallery to Host Panel Discussion on Artists Confronting Climate Change, 3/14
by BWW News Desk - Feb 24, 2015

From time immemorial art has functioned as a means to convince us of the existence of something we can't see. The artist has the power to circumvent verbal communication and fix Images in the brain which the mind tends to accept as reality. Since the 1960s there have been artists who used their work to confront environmental issues. Now, as the scientific evidence of climate change is corroborated by increased occurrence of extreme natural disasters in the form of hurricanes, volcanic activity, tidal waves and cyclones, artists are responding in their artwork with a heightened sense of urgency. “Seeing is Believing” is an exploration of the ways some artists have confronted this challenge in order to foster crucial changes in consciousness and in human behavior.
