Architect Releases New MemoirArchitect Releases New Memoir
by BWW News Desk - Jun 30, 2015

'Do We Need Architects?' (published by Xlibris) Alun Dolton answers that question with his life story, a journey of self-discovery and self-actualization that unfolds over 25 years of his time in the profession. He reveals, or rather, explores with his readers, his own motivations for becoming an architect, learning about the field and the changing paradigm of practicing it, to experiencing the impact of architecture on the built environment. His memoir investigates the meaning, perception and relevance of architecture in today's world. (more...)

BWW Reviews: THE ROYAL BALLET Offers an Uneven Mixed Bill by British ChoreographersBWW Reviews: THE ROYAL BALLET Offers an Uneven Mixed Bill by British Choreographers
by Sondra Forsyth - Jun 29, 2015

The second program of the Royal Ballet of England's return to New York City after an 11-year hiatus – and the first appearance of the company at the Koch Theatre in Lincoln Center – was an ambitious but not entirely successful presentation of works by British choreographers. The greatest failing was not onstage but in the Playbill. No notes at all were included to help the audience appreciate the ballets and the music in a historical context. While I applaud the company as well as the presenting Joyce Theater Foundation for eschewing the standard story ballets in favor of repertory fare, I am at a loss to figure out why the dancegoers were not given any information other than titles, credits, and casting. On the afternoon of June 27th when I was there, I overheard many people during pauses and intermissions commenting that a little assistance in comprehending the inspiration and intent of the choreographers would have been appreciated. BWW Review: Inventive Staging and Superb Acting Highlight Odyssey Theatre's OEDIPUS MACHINABWW Review: Inventive Staging and Superb Acting Highlight Odyssey Theatre's OEDIPUS MACHINA
by Shari Barrett - Jun 27, 2015

The wondrous production at the Odyssey Theater begins the moment you walk into the misty other-worldly atmospheric set designed by Keith Mitchell which, along with the dome and water well, has the blind soothsayer Tiresias perched in a woven swing hanging just above the entrance. A large, clear glass orb hangs above the front row with an image of an ancient warrior, soon identified as slain King Laius, within it. The mood is set for a theatrical experience unlike anything you have seen before when it comes to Greek Tragedy! (more...)

Minimus 3D Arkestra Blends 3d Cinema with Live MusicMinimus 3D Arkestra Blends 3d Cinema with Live Music
by BWW News Desk - Jun 26, 2015

Thanks to new technologies, artists can now make 3D films and play them like melodic, texture-based visual instruments in real time, performing in duets with acoustic musicians. A new genre of collaborative performance is in the making, as demonstrated in 'Minimus 3D Arkestra,' a visual-sonic concert by Ikuo Nakamura (film) and Hayes Greenfield (sax/voice/effects rig). This pioneering fusion of disciplines will be revealed in a five-week run, June 30 to July 30, at the intimate 13th Street Repertory Theatre, 50 West 13th Street. That venue, under the new leadership of Susan Merson, has been renovated and expanded into an arts center for all disciplines with music, poetry, photography and painting as well as traditional plays. Audiences will receive stereoscopic viewing glasses and watch a live duet between the two artists as they blend dazzling 3D films with live music. (more...)

Organized by NYC Parks Director of Art and Antiquities Jonathan Kuhn and Public Art Coordinator Jennifer Lantzas, the show is mounted on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the NYC Landmarks Law, enacted by Mayor Robert F. Wagner in 1965 with the intention of safeguarding those buildings and places that best represent New York City's cultural, social, economic, political, and architectural history.
