As BroadwayWorld reported yesterday, America's Poet Laureate Maya Angelou has passed away at the age of 86. The poet died last night, May 27th in a Winston-Salem, North Carolina hospital while recovering from an 'unexpected ailment'. She died surrounded by her family. BookExpo America (BEA), the biggest publishing event in North America, is underway now until May 31 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. Among authors and other celebrities in attendance is comedian Stevie Dupin (Stevie D.), who will sign copies of his new memoir "The Trans Am Diaries: A Hillbilly's Road Trip from Stand Up Comedy to Cancer…and Back Again" (Headline Books) on Thursday, May 29. The book is a humorous, occasionally serious, look at Dupin's life growing up in Kentucky, struggling in Hollywood and then coping with prostate cancer at a young age. Dupin held a launch party recently at Hemingway's Lounge in Hollywood. (more...)

The show included popular songs, from musical theatre classics and well known contemporary hits, performed by Christina both in her own voice, as well as in the voices of those who made them famous. Christina Bianco will be performing at the Edinburgh Festival with cabaret star Velma Celli and again later in the year (September 5th and 6th) in Londons iconic Hippodrome Casino. Yesterday Julianne Moore hosted an afternoon tea in honor of Tony nominee LaTanya Richardson Jackson, currently starring as Lena Younger in A RAISIN IN THE SUN. Held at Lady Mendl's at the Inn at Irving Place, an impressive group of women from theatre, film and television, including LaTanya's fellow Tony nominated costars Sophie Okonedo and Anika Noni Rose, gathered to salute LaTanya. Although she was unable to attend, First Lady Michelle Obama did send a note which was read aloud by Julianne Moore after Ms. Moore made a toast to LaTanya. Samuel L. Jackson and Bart Freundlich crashed the party to enjoy the afternoon with their wives. (more...)
