Sonoma State University Departments of Music and Theatre Arts & Dance present "The Magic Flute," with performances presented Feb. 23 to March 5, 2017.

"The Magic Flute" premiered in September, 1791 in Vienna, just two months before the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's premature death. Written for the common man and staged in a theater rather than at court, "The Magic Flute" is beloved for its blend of fantastical storytelling, appealing characters, Shakespearian scope, emotional range and the exquisite beauty of its music, which underscores the drama and features varied musical styles to depict key characters.

Mozart's final opera is a musical fantasy adventure about a noble prince who sets out to rescue a princess and ensure the triumph of truth and justice. "The Magic Flute" appeals to a broad audience as it touches on several themes including good and evil; love and jealousy; rivalry and power; and features a wide spectrum of characters including juicy villains and mystical beings.

The Sonoma State University's Departments of Music and Theatre Arts & Dance join forces for this main stage presentation with stage direction by Amanda McTigue and a 15-piece orchestra conducted by Grammy nominated Lynne Morrow.

Director Amanda McTigue describes "The Magic Flute" as being set all over the world and in netherworlds. Various artistic elements have been designed and created for the production including several life size puppets and elaborate costumes inspired by various cultural influences.

The Department presents its "$5 Friends & Family Night" performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2. SSU faculty, staff, alumni and students are admitted free and standard, senior and visiting student admission is $5 at the March 2 performance.

Sonoma State University students are admitted free to all performances with valid student ID.
