Eric Overmyer was born in Boulder, Colorado. He spent most of his youth in Seattle and eventually earned a B. A. in Theatre in 1973 at Reed College in Portland. Aside from On the Verge, his plays include The Heliotrope Bouquet, In a Pig's Valise, Don Quixote de la Jolla, Native Speech, Mi Vida Loca, In Perpetuity Throughout the Universe, and Aliki (an adaptation of Ibsen's play Peer Gynt). Mr Overmyer writes extensively for television, including for St. Elsewhere, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire and Law & Order, and has been nominated for two Emmy Awards. He received an Edgar Award for the television feature Rear Window. Overmyer was also a co-creator of the HBO series Treme, about musicians in post-Katrina New Orleans. More recently he's written for and executive produced Boardwalk Empire, executive produced The Affair, and written and produced Amazon's new series Bosch, based on the popular novels by Michael Connelly.

Director Karen Altree Piemme has this to say about the show: "I first experienced (and fell in love with) On the Verge (or the Geography of Yearning) when I was at Syracuse Stage in 1986 - the year it was published and began to be produced in regional theatres around the country. I was so struck by these characters: adventuresome, endearing, intrepid travelers, eager to explore and learn from the world around them; women who are not so much fearless, but rather willing to face their fears as they strike out into the unknown. It was particularly rare, at that time, to find a play that centered around such dynamic women. Further, it was smart. And funny. And so full of delicious language (I confess that I am a word nerd, and there was so much to chew on in this piece). I was just starting out in my career, and their passion and sense of adventure spoke to me on a deeply personal level. I was hooked from the start.

It's one of those plays that has stayed with me through the years, and I longed for the opportunity to bring it to life. I felt that Dragon would be a fabulous theatre in which to mount a production of the show, and so I pitched it to Dragon's Artistic Director, Meredith Hagedorn. She, too, fell in love with it at first read. I was able to cast my dream team of actors (all my first choices - straight offers, no auditions), and we began our wild adventure.

I think what I love most about this piece is that each of these women are accustomed to being solo travelers, but it is not until they join up and become "sister sojourners" that their journey becomes magical. It is testament to the fact that we are only truly transformed and truly transported when we are in community."
