Scripps Ranch Theatre Announces Staged Reading of VARIATIONS ON A THEME

In their on-going focus on new works by local artists, Scripps Ranch Theatre presents two staged readings of VARIATIONS ON A THEME by award-winning San Diego playwright, James Caputo. The performances take place at Scripps Ranch Theatre on the Campus of Alliant International University on April 14th and 17th at 7pm. Stephen Metcalfe, acclaimed author, playwright and screen-writer will direct.

VARIATIONS ON A THEME is a collection of four multi award-winning stories focused on the variety of love and its power to transform. At times hilarious, at times heartbreaking, each begins with two people at a challenging time of life. From the affluent to the homeless, they meet in restaurants, back alleys and funeral parlors. And as in life, each couple has their own story.

VARIATIONS ON A THEME features some of San Diego's finest actors including Roxane Carrasco, Eddie Yaroch, JoAnn Glover, Dave Florek, Hannah Logan, June Gottlieb, Monique Gaffney, Jill Drexler and Eric Poppick, Oliver Muirhead, Leslie Hicks and Hannah Florek.

Jim Caputo's Holiday Spirits (2012), and Maternal Spirits (2004) were produced at Scripps Ranch Theatre. He is the recipient of dozens of writing awards. His screen-play, Amy's Wish, was produced and accepted at three Indie Fests. Jim's teleplay, Brief Encounter, was produced and broadcast on public television stations across the country. His plays have been mounted from coast to coast. Acting Ensemble of South Bend is producing Maternal Spririts April of 2016 and Mountain Playhouse of PA has optioned Jim's latest play,The Miracle of Ballydonal.

Stephen Metcalfe's writing career has encompassed theatre, film and fiction. Stage plays include Strange Snow, The Gift Teller (SRT 2013) and Loves & Hours. Screen credits include Cousins (Isabella Rossellini & Ted Danson), Jacknife (Robert De Niro & Ed Harris), and Beautiful Joe (Billy Connelly & Sharon Stone); as well as the production drafts of Pretty Woman, Arachnophobia, It Could Happen to You, and Mr. Holland's Opus. Stephen's first novel, The Tragic Age, was published by St. Martin's Press in March, 2015. His second novel, The Practical Navigator, will be released by St. Martin's in August, 2016.
