Cast, Creatives, Venues Announced for Globe for All's MEASURE FOR MEASURE

The Old Globe invites your participation and coverage as Globe for All returns November 1 - November 20, in its third year on the annual roster, with Shakespeare's searing comedy Measure for Measure. Acclaimed director Patricia McGregor makes her Globe debut, following glowing reviews for The Public Theater Mobile Unit's Hamlet this summer.

The free Globe for All Shakespeare tour begins Tuesday, November 1 and extends its reach this year with an additional week of performances and eight new venues that stretch across San Diego County in a wide variety of economically, geographically, and culturally diverse communities. The tour will culminate in two low-cost performances on Sunday, November 20 in the Globe's rehearsal studios, part of Balboa Park's historic House of Charm.

Measure for Measure is one of Shakespeare's richest plays, mixing comedy and drama in a thrilling story of love and power. In a decadent Vienna, the strict, newly appointed leader Angelo wants to rid the city of moral decay-until he falls for a young nun pleading for the life of her brother and things get complicated. Justice, lust, hypocrisy, and redemption take center stage along with a wild cast of characters in a bold staging of this timely classic.

In addition to the performance, each partner organization is offered a Bard Basics workshop leading up to the performance. These workshops are designed to enhance the understanding and enjoyment of Shakespeare's work. Taught by professional Globe teaching artists, participants will be introduced to Shakespeare, his work, and the common themes and ideas of Measure for Measure. Each performance will begin with an introductory pre-show warmup led by the teaching artists and end with a casual talk-back with the Globe's Master Teaching Artist Lisel Gorell-Getz, who is also in the cast.

Globe for All presents free professional Shakespeare to diverse, multigenerational audiences in locations around San Diego County, with a cast of nine professional actors, a DJ, and four production staff members. Over the past two years, Globe for All has performed in military bases, homeless shelters, centers for the elderly, correctional facilities, recreation centers, libraries, and other community venues for nearly 2,200 audience members, many seeing theatre-and Shakespeare-for the first time. In addition to this year's 17-stop tour, Globe for All will play at The Old Globe for two low-cost performances.

Globe for All helps make theatre matter to audiences who, for whatever reason, do not enjoy regular access to the professional performing arts. With production values scaled to non-theatrical venues such as gymnasiums, cafeterias, and multipurpose rooms, the tour gives audiences an intimate, up-close, and visceral experience of live performance and fosters a shared sense of community between performer and spectator. For some, the Globe for All tour is their first experience seeing a piece of Live Theatre, and for others, it is an exciting return to the art form. In addition to providing the community with free access to professional performances of Shakespeare, Globe for All enriches the theatre experience by offering free workshops and other activities. This model of theatrical engagement has grown very popular across the country, and our tours are used as exemplars by many other theatre companies.

Venues for the 2016 tour include return visits to South Bay Community Services/Chula Vista Promise Neighborhood, Fourth District Senior Resource Center; San Diego Public Library - Central Branch, Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility, Chaldean Middle-Eastern Social Services, Father Joe's Villages, California State Prison, Centinela, Naval Base San Diego, and Veterans Village of San Diego. New venues this year include Mary Fay Pendleton School at Camp Pendleton, The Old Globe Technical Center, Lemon Grove Academy/Lemon Grove Historical Society/Lemon Grove Branch Library, City Heights/Weingart Branch Library & Performance Annex, The City of San Diego Parks & Recreation - Linda Vista, A Reason to Survive, and Escondido Public Library, with an additional location to be announced.

The cast includes recent graduates of The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program Makha Mthembu (Isabella, Soldier), Daniel Petzold (Angelo, Barnardine), and Christopher Salazar (Duke Vincentio, Elbow) in the lead roles, and Ally Carey (Pompey, Provost), Jake Millgard (Lucio, Froth), and Nathan Whitmer (Claudio). Joining them are local actors Lisel Gorell-Getz (Mistress Overdone, Mariana, Servant), Flordelino Lagundino (Escalus, Abhorson), Davina Van Dusen (Juliet, Nun, Friar Peter), and DJ Miki Vale.

The creative staff includes Sean Fanning (Scenic Design), Shelly Williams (Costume Design), and Jess Slocum (Production Stage Manager).

The tour culminates with two low-cost public performances offered in The Old Globe's rehearsal studios in the House of Charm on Sunday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. These performances will be open to the public. Tickets are $15 for general public, $10 for subscribers, and are currently available to subscribers only. Tickets will go on sale to the general public, subject to availability, on Friday, October 28 at 12:00 noon.

Patricia McGregor (Director) has twice been profiled by The New York Times for her direction of world premieres. Her recent credits include The Parchman Hour (Guthrie Theater), Hamlet (The Public Theater), Ugly Lies the Bone (Roundabout Theatre Company), brownsville song (b-side for tray) (Lincoln Center Theater), the world premiere of Stagger Lee (Dallas Theater Center), and the world premiere of Hurt Village (Signature Theatre Company). Her other credits include A Raisin in the Sun, The Winter's Tale, Spunk, Adoration of the Old Woman, Blood Dazzler, Holding It Down, Four Electric Ghosts, Nothing Personal, and The House That Will Not Stand. For several years she has directed the 24 Hour Plays on Broadway. She is a Usual Suspect at New York Theatre Workshop, a co-founder of Angela's Pulse, and a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow at Yale School of Drama, where she also served as Artistic Director of the Yale Cabaret.

The Tony Award-winning Old Globe is one of the country's leading professional regional theatres and has stood as San Diego's flagship arts institution for over 80 years.
