Tennessee Williams' seething drama won a Pulitzer Prize in 1948, changed the stylistic course of American theater and confirmed Williams as a major voice of his generation. The play centers on self-styled Southern belle Blanche Du Bois, who masks her growing dysfunction behind a veneer of ‘genteel’ sophistication. When she moves into the confined working class quarters of her sister and her brutish husband, desperate romanticism collide with truth and self-preservation.
