We Survived! Stories of Survival from the Armenian Genocide of 1915 is a celebration of vitality, joy, and culture that could not be destroyed! This theatrical compilation of survivors’ stories and historical records from the Armenian Genocide of 1915was written and directed by Mt. Hope High School's (Bristol/ Warren) Theatre Teacher and Director, Carol A. (Mikaelian), Schlink. Ms. Schlink is half Armenian and has always felt a strong and vital connection with her family's sad yet resilient heritage. The 100th anniversary of this horrific event on April 24, 2015 is her opportunity to honor her father's family and all Armenians, sharing their struggle to survive and their ability to instill joy in this rich cultural history.
Beginning with a contemporary Armenian wedding, the story goes back in time to a 1915 Armenian wedding that gets interrupted with orders to get ready for deportation. The actual stories of torture, starvation, and death that ensued are from Survivor accounts that come from numerous resources such as The Genocide Education Project; The Armenian Resource Library for Teachers; The Genocide Museum - Institute of Yerevan, Armenia; The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, as well as stories told to Ms. Schlink by her own grandparents.
In We Survived! survivors’ stories are told in the present tense – as the events unfolded and were experienced. The play then continues with their search for hope and renewal in America. The performance ends back at the contemporary wedding, full of Armenian music and dance – celebrating the vitality, joy, and culture that could not be destroyed.
The play premiered last Fall at Mt Hope High School and recently received awards and recognition at the Rhode Island High School Drama Festival presented at Cranston high School West. This performance is presented as part of the Armenian Genocide Centennial events in Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts where many Armenian families settled and the community thrived.
