Mixed Magic Theatre stages Free Man of Color by Charles Smith and directed by Ricardo Pitts-Wiley from June 16th - 26th; Fri & Sat 7:30 pm | Sun 3:00 pm. ALL TICKETS $20.

John Newton Templeton is unexpectedly freed after his master's death, he migrates to the free state of Ohio where he meets the Presbyterian minister and Ohio University president, Robert Wilson, an avowed abolitionist. Wilson seizes the opportunity to use the promising young ex-slave to fulfill his belief that Templeton has a divine calling to lead the free blacks in a sovereign nation of their own - a new colony called Liberia. In this play about race, culture, and the differences between education and assimilation in America, Wilson is forced to reevaluate his abolitionist views and Templeton is forced to examine the reason he was chosen to be the "first."
