Bare Theatre transports one of Shakespeare’s “problem plays” – concerning desire, sexuality, and social norms – to 1920?s Paris, staging the play inside a beautiful art gallery in downtown Durham. Duke Vincentio has placed his city in the charge of a strict judge, Angelo, who means to rule firmly in the duke’s absence and adhere to utmost purity. He decides to make an example of one Claudio, who has impregnated a maid out of wedlock. Isabella, Claudio’s sister and a novice nun, devises a clever but risky scheme to trick Angelo and save her brother.
